If you say that hardly any movies were released on Svhs then I guess finding a S-vhs player even harder . Will it output VHS in higher quality though?

it's far better to have an S-VHS VCR than an S-VHS "player" hell, i'm not even sure such a beast has ever existed,
at least in the U.S. market. at any rare, S-VHS VCRs can be found easily enough... try the BAY for starters...

I would take an S-VHS VCR over a standard VHS VCR. But really, you can only do so much with 240 lines of noisy, dirty resolution.

actually, my JVC HR-S8000U isn't half bad at all with 240 noisy, dirty-ass lines;

all told, the 3030 is among the very best 80's LDPs ever marketed in the U.S. -and one of the most cosmetically attractive models ever designed, YMMV-
probably not nearly good enough for those whom desire only the state of the art in LD playback,
but eminently watchable all the same, -usually at least as much as a good S-VHS recording-
and probably as good as most would ever need.

at any rate, here are some screencaps that might help determine if this model would prove personally acceptable;

Nobody wants to record to VHS, anymore...

excepting for weirdos such as myself, whom enjoy procuring top-flight NOS vintage blank stock,
and using MACROVISION-less high resolution SD source material such as Anime DVDs
to squeeze every last drop of performance out of the format i grew up with,
just to see just how good it can really get, usually with surprisingly pleasant results
( for such a limited format ) such as this;

(( 1985 MAXELL VHS blank (HGX GOLD HI-FI) both REC.ed and PBed on a 1988 S-VHS VCR (JVC HR-S8000U) ))

- now you might contend that i am cheating, not using a CRT monitor for those examples,
but i disagree. i've found that at least more recent HD monitors, -at least LCD, and probably PLASMA even more so-
seem to tend to "tell the truth" with SD sources like no CRT i have ever known seems remotely capable of.

my own 46in. LCD, -a low-mid grade WORST BUY "INSIGNIA" house brand model, with 3-D comb filtering-
seems to lay it all right out on the table, -the good and the bad- with every SD source i have, crisp, clear, precise and absolutely non-partisan.

i actually appreciate that; it shows me just how good -or bad- what i am viewing actually is,
no matter the format. through an HDM, Laserdisc can be noisy even at best,
but it can also be surprisingly good for it's age, and even by today's standards can impress,
providing the viewer is able to accept the format's handicaps and enjoy it with perspective in mind
to the age it was designed in, and that era's limitations.

no, none of these old legacy SD formats can remotely touch high-quality HD sources,
but at their best, they are surprisingly good performers for all that, and deserve due respect...

anyone as obsessive over a long-outmoded home video format as us LD enthusiasts generally tend to be,
would, in all probability, be considered quite "Weird" indeed in the eyes of about 99.9999999999999999999999% of the world population...

Exactly. it kind of makes it hard to bring new blood into a fanbase when the elite of any given one
often tends to shut out the "Noobs"

we were all "Noobs" once, you know. few, if any of us became knowledgeable fans in absolute isolation.
who's going to "Pass the Faith" along if no one is willing to?

it pretty much is. it's beneficial to give the player a good fresh relube. pop the top, expel the disc tray, and you'll have direct access to the laser sled transverse assy.

you can use WHITE LITHIUM GREASE and a light general purpose oil, though if you have affordable access to it, a Silicon-based grease is considered best.

the brass worm-drive shaft, and the guide shafts are the primary things to lubricate. GREASE for the WORM, OIL for the GUIDES;

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll310/shaorin-chan/PIONEER%20CLD-3030/CLD-3030JOHN9-24-131_zps3ec40a5b.jpg

this alone should correct most, if not all playback faults. it would be best to remove the disc tray entirely, to grease the gearwork underneath,
but that is not essential, and the timing gear for the tray drive shaft must be aligned properly with the tray's teeth track to be properly reassembled...

Variable Geo is pretty smooth and well-drawn, especially in the fight sequences. Just that most people are uncomfortable watching it because of all the fan service :lol: :oops:

heaven knows, enjoying one's fanservice in peace has got to be one of the very few outstanding reasons to be an Antisocial Nerd...

i dunno, LD perfomance via a PIONEER CLD-3030 directly feeding a 46" LCD monitor looks perfectly acceptable to my eye, at least,
and is also several thousand USD cheaper;

the dub's only value is that of unintentional comedy. every time SENGOKU's on screen,
you'd best expect a PMS-fest that will put your drunken, cantankerous uncle to shame.

seriously, the only copy of this series i currently own is the dub i taped off of satellite long ago,
and i mean to address that just as soon as i can. this show is spectacular in most every way,
DESPITE the terrible dub i'm currently stuck with. i can begin to imagine what it must be like subbed.

at least the original soundtrack is present. i've heard about the disaster that is the U.K. edition of this series,
including the butchered soundtrack. i can imagine what sort of atmosphere-killer that must be...

Wow, glad I don't care for GITS. Appleseed is all I need! And the '80s comics and OVA only!

no one would shut up for half a second about GitS back in my early OTAKU days of the mid/late-90's.
it was ALL about MACROSS/ROBOTECH for me back then, with some freshly-discovered GUNDAM thrown in for kicks.

then, suddenly, thanks to stumbling upon series like Galaxy Fraulein Yuna and TENCHI MUYO! my hormones finally began to kick into gear.

it took me until coming across a copy of the MANGA VIDEO LD edition of the GitS movie -in a large-ish Anime LD lot i got for cheap-
before i ever got to see it for the first time, and, to this moment, i'm still wondering what the big furry deal with it actually was, back in the day.

just not my kind of jam, i suppose...

I guess the same is true of Dream Hunter Rem but that’s a pretty shallow pond compared to A-ko...

got to admit though, the main heroine is indeed cute as a button, and certainly my kind of Anime Girl...

1- The motion picture (I love how grand and epic it is) ( same here )
2- The wrath of Khan (all round excellent film, even if a bit banal at it's core. also Scotty bringing dead crewman to the BRIDGE is UTTERLY STUPID)
3- Search for Spock (my favorite ST starship, the EXCELSIOR, debuts in this film, so it holds importance for that, at least)
4- Voyage home (good movie in it's way, though a bit too much of a sop to the average, non-trekkie audience at times)
5- Final frontier (bad, bad movie, but holds a sentimental place for me, so it is at least passively watchable)
6- Undiscovered country (plenty of USS EXCELSIOR on display, otherwise, not bad, but not quite great, either)
7- Generations (pretty crummy overall, and my second-favorite ST starship, the ENTERPRISE D, get's annihilated here, so there's that strike against it as well)
8- First contact (hot, sexy BORG action for the stupid ten-year-old in us all, i suppose)
9- Insurrection (SUCKS)
8- Nemesis (SUCKS HARD, and DATA passes on)

2.1- Star Trek (good original cast character likenesses, but BEER BREWERY "Engineering" SUCKS HARD)
2.2- Beyond (SUCKS REAL GOOD)
2.3- Into Darkness (SUCKS EVEN GOODER)

...although "From Star Wars to Jedi" is still not included, probably because of a statement from Lucas that might seem a little bit controversial now :mrgreen:

i have that one on VHS, my mom taped it off of HBO in the late-80's, when then they aired it and RotJ back to back;
