Just heard a commercial on the radio this morning for Farmer's Insurance which opened up with: Does your insurance company think you're watching Laserdiscs on a tube TV in your home? Then it went on about home owners insurance covering expensive electronics. It gave me a bit of a chuckle hearing that. Especially since I actually am watching Laserdiscs on a tube TV in my home! |

I will pay for signatures so long as they're not crazy expensive. Free would be better, but if I'm a fan, eh, a few bucks won't kill me.
Patrick Stewart's autograph at Wizard World this past summer was crazy. No way was I going to pay $75, after already paying $60 just to get in the friggin' door. Which would make really make it $135 for the autograph. No thanks!
Some stars and directors don't charge. I got my Blood Feast LD autographed by Herschell Gordon Lewis and he didn't charge. He was really taken aback seeing his movie on LD (even put his glasses on to take a closer look!)
Fred Dekker, I understand, doesn't charge either. |

Might as well resurrect this thread since I finally got a Hi-MD recorder. An MZ-NH700 . It's not the top of the line MZ-RH1 or MZ-RH10 (those still go for a LOT of cash), but it will do for now.
So far, I like the playback as it is louder than any of my regular MD portables and has better sound (for the price these originally went for, they better have good DACs and amps!) Haven't tried to do any recordings with it yet. But at least now I can use those Hi-MDs you sent me xtempo! |

The worst LD player remote is the one that didn't come with that second hand player you bought. |

Now that I think again about this question, I guess the accurate answer would be the Dragon's Lair arcade game back in '83 or so since it was running off an LD. |

Yeah and I was into arcade games, so MVS was obvious. Had this out in my garage. Miss it sometimes since I'm a huge arcade fan (pick up 'n play with high speed is my kind of thing).

Variable Geo is pretty smooth and well-drawn, especially in the fight sequences. Just that most people are uncomfortable watching it because of all the fan service
Then there's Giant Robo . This is one of my favorite anime of all time. Very nicely animated, great story and engaging characters. |

Got a few LDs autographed recently at Chiller Theatre (I hate this convention, but they always have a great guest list):
Got this one autographed by Noah Hathaway (played "Atreyu" in his youth) for a friend whose favorite movie is The Never Ending Story (gonna frame it and give it as a Birthday gift):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/yuushi/LDvsDVD/Hathaway_Autograph_zps8kshqfrs.jpg
This one I got autographed by Erica Gavin who played the titular (hehee, "TITular") Vixen! . She's up there in years, but was nice to talk to about Russ Meyer:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/yuushi/LDvsDVD/EricaGavin_Autograph_zpsyxrvilac.jpg
Got this Pocahontas LD Box autographed by the voice of Pocahontas herself, Irene Bedard. She was really nice and made a comment that one of her movies has ONLY been released on Laserdisc!:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/yuushi/LDvsDVD/Irene_autograph_zpscqbl7q64.jpg
Now, I was thinking of getting my LD of The Sword and the Sorcerer autographed by Kathleen Beller, but I got this really pretty shot of her on this German lobby card from the movie, so opted for that instead. Perfect choice as she was crazy happy to see this shot as she hadn't seen it before and even asked if she could take it and show her publicist to see if he could find the shot for her (she only had one shot on her table for autographs from TSATS --and even she said it was crap!)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/yuushi/LDvsDVD/Beller_Autograph_zpsll7m5duc.jpg
Got a pic with her too (she's tiny as I'm only 5'6"):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/yuushi/LDvsDVD/BellerampMe_zpscwnaga0c.jpg
Lastly, I forgot to bring my It's a Wonderful Life LD box with me (I'm a dumbass) so I got this shot autographed by Carolyn Grimes who played "Zuzu":
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/yuushi/LDvsDVD/Zuzu_Autograph_zpsgx4qebqe.jpg
Hopefully, the next Chiller won't have as many great guests as I don't want to go back. |

Has anyone dealt with this ebay seller?
I have bought some LDs from him in the past without too much issue, but I have had two interactions with him regarding LD players that left a bad taste in my mouth.
First was when I was trying to sell a Runco LJR-I on ebay last year. I put it up on the Bay of E with a $300 starting bid, but I got no bids.
After the auction ended, I get a message from him asking if I would sell the player for less than the starting bid. I reply, you can make me an offer and I will consider it.
His response: "It's worth about $100 to me."
I feel a little insulted that he's offering 1/3 of what my starting bid was, but I merely reply: "Sorry, I've sold lesser players for more than that so I have to decline."
He responds: "Well you have to admit that this is not the model that most people want. Most want the LJR-II with the Dolby Digital out."
I respond: "Indeed and if I was selling one, I would sell it for more, but this player is still worth more than just $100."
That appears to be the end of it for a while.
Fast forward to now, I list a Runco LJR-II on Ebay starting bid of $250 and a buy-it-now option of $500. Not even half a day into the auction, this same guy uses the buy-it-now option and send me the money.
I'm like, okay, not sure if he remembers our previous interaction over a Runco LD player, but unit is paid for and I just have to ship it. I test it one more time to make sure it work before shipping. I pack it INSANELY well--4 layers of bubble wrap, at least 3 inches of packing popcorn all around it in a thich, tri-wall box. And ship it off to him.
A week later, he complains that I didn't include the power cord. Truthfully, I didn't think much to put the power cord in the box and it kind of slipped my mind as it uses a standard 3 prong computer power cord, but also I never said in the auction that it would include a power cord (nor was there a power cord in the pictures of the auction.) None the less, I say sorry about that I can overnight you a power cord if he likes.
He says no, not a problem as he used a cord he already has, but now is saying that the player will not eject the tray fully and sends me pictures of the tray of the LJR-II only sticking out 1/4 of the way.
I say "that's pretty odd, but it might be an easy fix. Can you take the bonnet off of the player and send me a video of the tray trying to eject so I can what the problem might be?"
He responds: "I don't have the means to shoot a video or upload it to the internet."
Now I'm getting even more skeptical, he doesn't have a phone that can shoot video?
I then say: "Can you take the bonnet off and take some pictures of the tray trying to eject and send them to me so I can see what's obstructing the tray?"
He reponds: "I'm afraid I might make the problem worse if I try to open it up. I did contact a shop 2 hours from me who said they could fix it, but it would cost $200-250."
I'm super skeptical now. Doesn't want to try to fix it for free, but knows some shop who's willing to work on a super rare LD player that has been at end of life for a long time now? And already has a ballpark figure for the price of the fix? Come on now. I'm thinking he's just trying to extort money from me so he can get the player for cheaps like he wanted with the LJR-I.
Before I could respond again, he messages me: "I contacted Ebay and they say the options are you give me a full refund and ship you back the player, you send me a shipping label and send you back the player then you give me a refund or you can give me a partial refund to pay for repairs of the non-working item."
I'll continue this later . . . |

So I decide to see if I could call his bluff since I think he just wants me to send him a partial refund to try to get the player cheaper than what he paid for.
I reply: "I will send you shipping label then and give you a refund upon receipt of the player. Please send me the dimensions of the box I sent to you so I can prepare the shipping label."
And I pretty much called it since he says: "Ahhhh, I hate to have to send it all the way back. Do you think you will repair and resell? Would you be willing to offer anything, to help with repair on my end?"
My reply: "I'll definitely fix it, but not sure if I'll resell it. Don't want to run the risk of it getting damaged again in transit
And I don't want to put any money towards any repair shop I'm not familiar with. When I get LD players repaired, I usually do the repairs myself or contact the LD player techs I'm familiar with to get them fixed.
So go ahead and send me the dimensions of the box and I'll send you a shipping label to ship it back to me. Once I get it back, I'll refund you."
For some time there is no response, until: "Please send me the power supply cord and any other accessories that were part of the listing"
Me: "So you want the power cord now?
Are you keeping the player?"
Him: "Well I guess so. I was able to get the repair shop to commit to $200.
I will say that I am not happy though about having to Shell out another $200 to get this thing back in the condition that it was sold Are you at least going to send me the power cord or do I have to buy that as well?"
Me: "No, I said I would send that to you.
I'll have it in the mail tomorrow.
And if you're truly not happy with the transaction, you can send it back to me for a full refund."
Shortly thereafter, I get a message from Ebay that a return request was initiated by him. I pick the option to send him a shipping label and full refund upon return of the item, and I include the tracking number like it asks and a message to him that the shipping label is on its way.
Then he leaves me negative feedback on Ebay: "Item shipped missing parts and arrived broken"
Which like I pointed out isn't true about the missing parts (power cord.) Filed a report against his feedback since I cooperated with him so he can get a refund, but who knows if that will actually be retracted.
Also I have to hope that he doesn't trash the player before shipping it back or pack it shoddily so that it gets trashed in the mail.
Needless to say, I won't be dealing with him ever again for Laserdiscs or anything else. |

When I encounter someone I can't get along well with, like your conversation about the LJR-I, I usually block these buyers so that they cannot bid or buy my auctions anymore. There is an option like that somewhere quite hidden in the ebay account settings. I think your best option now is to send him a shipping label and get the player back. This guy smells like trouble. Good to know. Wish I knew about that sooner!!! |

This just keeps getting better and better!
So he finally gets back to me last night: "After waiting forever for the return label,... I got the item all packaged up and its original box with original packaging and took it to FedEx. They did not accept the package as they said the postage provided was inadequate. I've asked eBay to figure out what is going on..."
Me: "I don't understand how you can you 'waited forever for the return label' when FedEx tracking shows that you received the label on Thursday the 5th, just two days after you requested the return.
I am contacting Fed Ex now to see why they didn't accept the package"
Contacted Fed Ex and they say that he waited too long to use the label, as Fed Ex Ground labels expire after 3 days (something tells me he knew that and why he waited so long.)
He then changes his tune: "Okay let me explain. I did not get your shipping label 2 days after you sent it as I guess FedEx didn't explain they left it at my neighbor's house not mine. I was able to track it down a day or two later. But none of that really matters. I did not wait until today to try and ship it I actually took it in on Friday. The issue was not that the label had expired but rather that it was inadequate amount of postage for that size and weight of box. They simply turned me away. As far as I understand the label is not expired it's just not enough postage. After being rejected on Friday I did enjoy my weekend and Monday holiday before contacting eBay and you."
What a load of BS! First he says he "waited forever" now he says it was delivered to his neighbor's house?!?! I also called him out on the "insufficient postage" as I used my work Fed Ex account and the additional cost would have just been charged to our account. Plus, he supposedly waits 4 days to contact me back knowing that his is a time sensitive matter? Come on now!
He tries to file a complaint with Ebay AGAIN saying I'm not cooperating, and I shut that down with the swiftness explaining that I sent him the shipping label (gave them the tracking number to prove that he did receive it two days after he opened the return claim) and that he waited until the 10th (4 days after he received the label) to try to return it so the label expired.
Ebay responds: "Thank you for writing back to eBay Customer Service regarding the Laserdisc Player (item 253169261866) which you sold to “theultimateshoppingcenter”. I’m sorry to hear that your buyer opened a case because they stated that the item they received is different from the listing and I understand that you want this item to returned back. Please allow me to assist you. After reviewing the case, I found that you communicate with them promptly. I appreciate the fact that you are highly cooperative with your buyer towards the resolution of your case and have agreed with the return of the item. I can also see that you mentioned that you already provided a return label for them to return the item. Please be informed that we have now asked the buyer to send the item back within the next 9 days via tracked service to allow us to monitor the item's delivery to your registered return address. Please be informed that we’ve asked them to return the item using the label you provided. Once we get confirmation that the buyer has successfully returned the item, we will refund the buyer with the cost of the item plus the original postage charge on your behalf. On the other hand, if the buyer failed to return the item to you, we will not hesitate to close the case in your favor and release the funds back to your PayPal account. I trust that I've explained things clearly and wish you all the best on your future transactions. Thank you for choosing eBay and have a great day ahead! Kind regards,"
I am now sending him another label via Fed Ex overnight (since it seems you can't send PDF files over Ebay messaging otherwise I would have just messaged him one to print out) and giving Ebay BOTH tracking numbers so they can see that he received the label and if he ever tries to ship it again. |

Well, he actually did use the shipping label as the tracking number shows it's in transit.
Now did he trash the player before shipping it? Did he ship me the right player?
I hope he just does the right thing, but I'm not holding my breath. |

Looks like I have a happy ending after all.
Got the box and I shot a video of me opening it to make I cover my a** in case something isn't right in the package and he cries foul.
Its the same player (made sure I checked the serial number.) And doesn't seem worse for wear.
Oh yeah, remember him saying the tray won't open?
tray2.jpg
Lying sack of crap. Player works just fine. There's no possible way that something broke on the way to him, but fixed itself on the way back to me.
Welp, I guess I better issue him his refund unless I can further bring this matter up with Ebay about him being dishonest.
but really, with Ebay siding with the seller so much these days, is it really worth my time? |

Serious question: why do so many people with mental problems obsess over LD? I don’t need to name a single example, we all know them, many are members.
I don’t *think* I’m emotionally impaired or Skitzophrenic or anything but I’m starting to think I must be or I wouldn’t be watching LDs, right? Maybe my attic is full of heads and I’m blocking it out... Just to be certain, who in this thread is "obsessing" over LD?
I will admit to having mental problems (which I am seeing a Psychiatrist for), but is sharing a valid complaint about an Ebay seller who is trying to swindle me out of money and/or a valuable LD player is far from obsessing, wouldn't you think? |

Techmoan recently posted a video on CX Encoding as pertaining to LP technology:
CX Discs : Better, Worse & the Same as a normal record - A Forgotten Format https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5XCvsNUkmI
He does mention at the end that the technology was incorporated into both CED and LD, but focuses mainly on LPs for the video. |

This guy is bad news. He bought a muse disc from me and claimed it was damaged (before even playing it) and forced a return (disc was fine as I knew it would be).
He also bought a McIntosh 7020 from me once (I sold very clearly indicating that AC3 was non functional) and put back for sale the next day at double the price without disclosing the AC3 issue....very shady dude. Jeez, this guy is a total dirtbag. Wish there was a better way to get the word out on him than just on this forum. |

Short answer for "best bang for your buck" LD player with those specs is the Pioneer CLD-D704.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be one on the Bay of E right now.
Next lower tier LD player I would recommend is the Pioneer CLD-D604/5/6. It has basically the same capabilities as the 704, but a noisier picture.
I wouldn't go with the D502 as you get about the same noisy picture as the D60x, but lose digital frame memory (capability to freeze frame/scan CLV discs) AC-3 out and any type of digital audio out. |

Spirit of Wonder
It's a pretty cool anime that mixes slice of life stuff with some sci-fi. I have the US release from AnimEigo. I imagine it's the same dub.
Too there's only one episode. The manga is pretty fun and has some better stories than the one they animated. |

I got the card mentioned here in this thread --the ATi 750 PCIe. Has a really good 3D comb filter, and excellent color reproduction.
It's not made anymore, but you can probably still find some new, old stock on Ebay.
I used to use the Pinnacle capture products, but the first one I got, Pinnacle Movie Board, didn't support 64-bit Operating Systems. Then I got one of the USB capture cards, but then I realized it wouldn't capture with decent color reproduction even if you used an off-board 3D comb filter like a DVD recorder.
I still use Pinnacle Studio as the software is pretty easy to use and has a lot of options for exporting your project, but the hardware is lacking for capturing. |

I've read that you can use D-VHS to record S-VHS on an S-VHS VCR.
This page says as much with the recognition holes:

It's just that not too many people would want to since D-VHS blanks are much more expensive than S-VHS blanks! |

From the gents who already have upgraded to 4K, they say that plugging their LD players into the displays via just composite have yielded very good results:
http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=7375
I am thinking of jumping into 4K too, once I get my finances in order (moving again soon), and like you I want to get one of those play 'em all players with 8-channel output. One of the Sony or Oppo's on this site (because their 4K players are also region free for DVD and standard blu-ray):

I probably won't completely abandon LD, but I might start thinning the collection out of titles I have gotten on blu-ray and 4Kbr. So long as there aren't supplements or edits that make keeping the LD release worth holding onto.
I find myself doing that with even some DVD releases that have supplements that later releases don't have. |

...you're browsing through cable channel menus and as you notice the movie titles you try to remember if they were released on Laserdisc
...you're running on a treadmill and as certain times come up on the clock, they make you think of Laserdisc player model numbers (ie: 406, 604, 704, 909, 919, 939, 959, 1010, etc.)
...you're talking movies with a friend or friends and when their favorite movie is mentioned you try to recall if you have it on Laserdisc (bonus points if you actually say you have it on Laserdisc)
...a friend of yours posts a music video that they like on social media and you comment that you have the video on Laserdisc
...you find a music/thrift shop that sells old records and you HAVE to check to see if they sell Laserdiscs
...you find a used electronics shop and you HAVE to check to see if they have Laserdisc players
Feel free to add more! |
