LD is a noisy format, you see it a lot in reds. Your TV needs to be calibrated to make the most of it.

However it sounds like you are saying it looks worse than VHS and that shouldn't be the case.

Many things can add to noise in general such as vibration, dried out capacitors, etc but a huge one is crosstalk. If the laser is out of alignment you'll get crosstalk on CLV discs, described as a herring bone pattern. Do you have any CAV discs and do they look look significantly better?

Is this rot? I have rotted discs, but the speckling is more multi colored. I've seen rot on the copies of Heavy Metal that I had to go through to get a good copy, and they were also more multi-colored. I've never seen rot on a Japanese disc, however, and I'm wondering if this horrible video is so because it was a transfer from a VHS tape? It just seems to be a VHS-sort of video-noise.

Hi yazorin,

Does this disc have any "helicoptering" (distortion) in the sound? If so, it is almost certainly laser rot. I suspect this is the case, as the reference number indicates that this is a very old release. Although not as common on Japanese releases as on U.S. ones, laser rot does occur on them too. This is most often seen on the very old Japanese releases, particularly ones with reference numbers like this one, with the "FY" prefix. I have seen it on a few myself. Most of these are pressings from the very early 80's. Also, watch out for reference numbers with the "G78F", "G88F", and "G98F" prefixes. These are also prone to rot, as they are older Japanese releases too. I hope this is helpful.

Best Regards,
David

Close - CLV was the public name for both, but CLV continuously slows down the disk, while CAA uses discrete graduations to reduce crosstalk.

CAA disks can be spotted by the small number of CAV frames (and associated visible sync patterns) at the beginning of a side.

WOW I must have not really been into anime when I was younger, or I really didn't care about this title.
Never really heard of it, name is familiar but who kind of cares.

Eyes are just too much in a bad way, why did they have to do that.

I remember a time when I used to like movies.....

Good evening Rein-o

I hear you.

P.S Something through the movie industry has been lacking over the past few years.
Rare exceptions included here of course However, I feel they are becoming fewer as time goes by........... Our eyes and minds may become clearer as the years pass by.......... do we not see things as they are....... I am not as captivated as I once was..... But the AV Interest lives on and one shall endure...... to find the rare Gems out there.

Kind Regards to you Friend

I've decided to try a product I bought to seal water leaks on my flat roof section, it's called "Through the ROOF". It stays flexible and it is clear. I'm not worried about these items slipping off during use as they are in contact with the disc while it is spinning. I'm more concerned with the product sticking to the disc label.

I gave up on the paint used on concrete as everything I saw dried to a hard surface with a grit texture which makes sense, don't want to be grinding grit into the labels.

BTW: the difference in height of the actual spindle motor clamp has enough difference from motor to motor that the small difference in height from 10 mil to 23 mil would be OK but I would watch it as that could be another good solution.

I can report after playing discs the past week there have been no issues, I've watched a handful of films including a CAV 3 disc set, all played perfectly, also tried to note the labels before and after playing, some already had marks on them (probably from another bad ring) discs with with clean labels seemed to be undamaged after playing, no marking from what I could tell.

I did get a sheet of slip tape, but like Kurtis described it is hard vinyl like and has a grit surface, probably not another solution for this.

Good day Gentlemen ie,

Marcham93, Audioboyz1973, Signofzeta, Rein-o, Takeshi666, Elahrairrah, Forper, Laserdisc_fan, Randyv, Tasuke & Je280,

Laserdisc_fan: The Blue Nile - Downtown Lights Love Blue Nile that band produce great musical works (Thank you for sharing.)

Guys I have just read all of your posts, and to be honest my pennies worth is quite redundant However, as a fellow member who appreciates the company here, and as words of thanks for each view point and comments conveyed by all of the above.

Marcham93 Thank you for starting this Subject;
Each person here is an individual who's right it is to freely express, and equally by taking the time (in fact I am at work but I Made the time to read all of your comments.) I used this time wisely as Contractors carrying out their duties meant that I had to stay where I was..... So here I am.

Each one' weather (and from) the initial intro, and there afterward I Genuinely enjoyed and reflected upon and thought of my own experiences with the formats I have: CD / MD / LD / DVD / HD DVD / BLU-RAY & BLU-RAY 4K ........ I love this hobby and all that it brings.

A level of civility here is to be maintained at all times, otherwise this forum will fade in it's appeal to all those who cherish coming here and contributing with each unique angle.

I could convey many things here ''that for all intents and purposes have been covered in my previous posts''

Due to the many hours I work, when coming off shift it takes time to clear ones mind, I haven't watched a laserdisc on my new TV for many months, I need more cables analogue to HDMI converter and other items are in need of purchase and completion........ Available disposable income after bills and so on.

The latest TV's have less Legacy inputs and this poses what can be obstacles....... Laserdisc is a format that I shall never part with, and my aim is to get all of these connections and other connections sorted, however it has been slow.....I invested heavily into the Laserdisc Format and for good reason ''I am so glad I did at the time''

I still have around £1200 worth of laserdiscs to pay for from a trusted seller who reserved and I shall see this through........Hopefully by end of this year 2018.
After this my laserdisc collecting will be 99% complete apart from the odd title here and there.

To be honest it's been a long arduous journey, a downright struggle if I am completely honest....... But Remains the best Format for me personally.

However I only purchase 4K Blu-Ray discs now, unless one of the studios only releases the Blu-Ray version of a title I like.

I have The MATRIX on DVD / (LD Preferred) and HD DVD (Warners rotters Damn it) and so with the announcement that this is coming out on 4K pleases me greatly.

I have been informed that Star Trek Voyager will not be released on Blu-Ray, as The Next Generation re-mastered onto Blu-Ray box sets did not sell as well as hoped
So it looks like I shall purchase the above on DVD, sometimes you go with what is available, it can be disappointing at times but that's the way it is, and we all know that.

Guys as mentioned above I am grateful for reading each of your viewpoints and passion of such.

I enjoy 4K for what it offers and when done right is superb, and when Purchasing from the USA can cost up to £42-50 inclusive of postage & taxes, and if I have the funds to do this then I do so with joy knowing that I have purchased something exclusive for me personally....... It's personal that's all.

I prefer physical media, however there is room for both and shall be looking at the purchase of a media Hard drive for my music needs as I am a member of a numerous specialised online retailers.
There is so much music 24bit studio masters that I have listened to that are superb, but around 20% that I would like to own on CD is not on offer, so download it will need to be.

My Point is this and we can all relate to this I am sure: I want quality in music and Movies and so, if it's available I will go with what is shall purchase the necessary in order to obtain....., It takes time with all of these things as we all know.

The main thing is that we enjoy our purchases and enjoy the experiences that accompany such fruits of our labours.

I for one appreciate: Marcham93 viewpoints of which are Genuinely valid...... What ever your needs are go with it and enjoy, and I look forward to the reading from you on any subject that you may have.

One of the reasons why I like this site ''especially to post on like no other'' is because it's quite a unique experience here......... I like that and hope with all seriousness that you all do to, and if not then that's ok also.

Sincerest Regards to everyone and take good care of yourselves,

Kindest Regards

By going the ebay route you are just setting yourself up for more trouble, better to comb craigslist for a few months and local flea markets etc.

I did get lucky with a player on ebay for sale locally, I was able to pick it up in person since the seller was 15 minutes from where I live.

pick it up in person.
If that's just not possible then insist they ship it as you specify; including double boxing. Ask before purchasing and save yourself some hassle - don't buy it if they won't. I've gone so far as to supply the proxy bidder in Japan with an annotated diagram of how to pack it - multiple players shipped from Japan with 100% success rate.
On the other hand my first attempt via an ebay seller - one layer of bubble wrap and then basically wrapped in cardboard. On top of that the shipping label was actually attached to the bottom side so it travelled upside down. No prizes for guessing how that arrived. You really just have to wonder how stupid some people are thinking that kind of packing is adequate.
I'm thinking probably more players are destroyed these days by bad shipping than we lose by natural attrition.

My inquiries paid off. After contacting Greg Palma at Noble Electronics (EAD Authorized Repair Center), he was able to provide the information. The cable takes a 9V DC, 5.5mm x 2.1mm barrel connector with a + center pin. I happen to have this adapter, and was able to get my cable to work perfectly. The LED lights up green with a positive AC-3 lock. Although it isn't labeled, the decoder only works in one direction, which isn't surprising. You need to orient the module as though you were reading the label on the box. The left hand side is the AC-3 RF input, and the right is a demodulated coaxial output. As requested, below is a picture of the cable. In case you are wondering about the size, the box portion is 2 x 2 x 5.5 inches (5 x 5 x 14 cm), so a pretty compact unit.

I began collecting LDs in 2006 so was a late comer to the format, yet even at that stage I was shocked at the inflated prices some sellers were looking for certain titles.

By way of example a typical seller on LDDB.com who resided in Japan was often looking a minimum of 5 times what they had paid for the item in Japan. Quite often it was more like 10 times! How do I know this?.....because when I started buying from Japan myself in 2007 I found out the real prices which were only a fraction of the prices the sellers were looking. Even taking into consideration the fees associated with buying from a proxy which the sellers who resided in Japan could often avoid their prices were astronomically inflated.

It seems to me the laserdisc marketplace was dominated by a few greedy sellers from Japan in the early days before proxies became common place. These sellers created artificially high prices since there was no shortage back then of rare titles - they obviously wanted to preserve that myth that there was a shortage. Even as late as 2007 when I logged onto Yahoo for the first time it was like looking at an ocean of rare titles as far as the eye could see - there were loads still available. 12 years on and 10,000 LDs later, things have certainly changed but I think those early sellers have a lot to answer for in terms of explaining where the high prices first originated from.

UPDATE: The decoder arrived today. Excellent double boxed packaging, and also came with a card from Publius explaining that it was some bad solder joints on the power supply board. I haven't had a chance to hook up and test yet.

As far as I'm concerned, Publius made things right. Communication had been good early on via this site, but then he only seemed available via snail mail. The decoder was sent to him last November and I did say that I was not in a rush to get it fixed and returned.

Another member also sent a decorder to him from overseas, I hope they also get their decoder back and also have a positive story to share.

A soundbar is certainly going to be a good upgrade from the speakers in the TV. If you have two regular speakers (you mentioned using rear's with the soundbar), you may want to ditch the soundbar and go with a standard 2.0 setup. All things being equal, a 2.0 setup is better than a soundbar.

Thanks for that.

I am in Scotland so transportation costs can become rather restrictive with the cost & risk of damage while in transit.

Had a few nice players over the years & picked them all up here in the UK but now only have a couple of players, a CLD-D925 PAL/NTSC player & a CLD-1010 as a back-up.

Quite happy with what I have now but I do enjoy looking at nice interesting units so thanks again for posting the pictures, great to see.

Cheers & enjoy your "new" player  .

.

Yes, LD-X1 is not specially better than a CLD-959, but like you I love the design !
I will continue to to other player picture in the future !

would it be possible also in the future to add half point rating ? And also 0 point rating ?
Because now, we have only the choice between 1,2,3,4,5. If the movie it not bad or not good, I would like to rate it 2.5. If it is crazy bad, 0.
