Yes, I'd rather go for VHS than VCD. The artifacts are extremely heavy on VCD. Only thing I'd say is better on VCD than VHS is the audio, and that it's easier/faster to make backups of them. Picture-wise it's as awful as can be.

VHS Hi-Fi Stereo audio is pretty damn good. I have many original VHS tapes that sound great and better than Dolby Digital 2.0 or MPEG2 2.0 as seen on VCD
or digital broadcasts. My UK Star Trek: DS9 tapes sound fantastic. It totally s**ts on the DVD releases.
The original VCDs released by Philips in Europe in the early 90s have a decent picture quality and they look much better than the average Hong Kong VCD title however
I have also seen some decent HK releases. My HK VCD of Hero with Jet Li looks pretty amazing for a VCD.

The Philips VCDs here in the UK where branded CD-I Philips had there own player which would also play games most notable dragon's Lair and Mad Dog Macree

The box's had CD-I printed on them instead of VCD the cover art is very good and sound and picture quality is also good for something released in the 90's

I think there are about 64 title release's which I have all of them some I have duplicates and willing to trade

Currently I have 527 titles on VCD in my collection (for some titles I have several different editions).
99% of these are original licenced VCDs of domestically made (in the country of the VCD's origin) films.
They are from the following countries:

# Thailand (160)
# Malaysia (146) (mostly Indonesian, some Malay films)
# India (105)
# Hong Kong (59)
# Philippines (25)
# Indonesia (24)
# Pakistan (12)
# Nigeria (10)
# Cambodia (7)
# Turkey (5)
# China (4)
# Egypt (2)
# South Korea (2)
# Iran (1)
# Singapore (1)
# Bangladesh (1)

Most of these films are unavailable in other formats than VCD.

I hate VCD quality but I have quite a few from the day. Without the VCDs I used to pickup in Sydney Chinatown in the 90s I never would have seen classics like Made in Hong Kong (Still can't find that on DVD) and Bounce Kogals. I have some official Japanese concert VCDs from Hong Kong of Amuro Namie and Aikawa Nanase, nice packaging. I have a Japanese VCD of Rie Tomosaka posing and talking complete with Obi etc. I used to watch on my import Saturn with VCD card late 90s..I like the option to pause and zoom.

Most DVD players do (not all!)
Some LD players do also! :D

But the quality is really bad!

I recently have been playing my VCDs through my Philips Blu Ray Player and it's the best quality I have seen for VCD. I have tried many DVD and other Blu Ray players but they have never looked so good. I was shocked. Almost DVD quality. Only scenes that were somewhat questionable were the real fast moving scenes.

I have some Korean VCDs actually that I bought new in the late 1990s/early 2000s (only 2, I think).

Never seen a Japanese VCD release but wouldn't be surprised if there were some.
When it comes to electronics, Japan tried out pretty much everything.

There was SVCD which could reach the heady heights of 480p! (576p for PAL) Not sure if they were ever released commercially but the down side was films were usually split over three or more discs.

Yeah but we need that "HD" in the name. 960x720 (none square pixels for 16:9) and heavy compression. Half an hour per disc:)

Youtube-quality 720P would easily fit into SVCD bitrates. With h.265 it might even be half-decent 720P depending on the content. ;)

In regards to players able to play VCD's, here is what I have found:

I have a Sony UBP-X800 player (2017 model) and I have personally played the following formats: CD, VCD, DVD, BD, and UHD(4K). The VCD I tried (2001 HK issue) played well; but, the PQ was not sparkling. I would say it is between CED and VHS in quality. The player is not at fault as I tested a UHD and the image on a 1080 set was the best I have seen. The X800 can also play a variety of 3D discs; but, I could not find the list in the manual. I will continue to look.

Note: The manual for the X800 does not mention that the player can display VCD's. I did try an HD-DVD and the player told me that it could not read the disc. I thought I would try anyway.

I’m assuming those would be Hong Kong dollars, otherwise that price sucks for something worse than VHS. Heck, I think the remastered LD was only $30 USD. Singapore maybe? What’s the date?

I think that's Malaysian?? I've had some bootleg DVDs with those types of price stickers and they were from Malaysia or Thailand.

No date release on discs or cover. "For sale and rental in Singapore only" on back cover.
