A question for the golden ears: Can you hear the deference between music recorded in stereo and the same music recorded in Dolby Surround when played back on a two channel audio system? |

In what situation would I be able to experience this? |

That question is actually tougher than mine. To ask in a different way: on an audio system set to stereo would you be able to hear the phase shifting used to create a Dolby Surround (or matrix quad) recording? To ask in another way: If your a two channel person would you buy a recording that had (Surround Sound). As an example, you walk in to a Best Buy an on rack there are two cds of the same concert one stereo and one stereo surround (matrix) which one would you choose and why? Personally I can't tell the difference, but then I don't have golden ears. |

It's probably detectable, but really it's sorta a hard situation to imagine. Any setting I can see myself in where you have a surround mix and a stereo mix of the same exact thing there are going to be other mastering differences as well. If I play something surround (or Quad, same thing) through two channels I can't detect any artifacting, but that could just be because I don't have a two channel version to compare it to. Anything you can see on a scope (and you could) can be heard (if not understood) by the human ear. |
