Post subject:  Soft/Muffled Vocal Audio on CLD-D504 [Problem Solved]

I picked this up recently and wasn't able to test the audio when I checked video due to what was available and what I could carry in my car. Anyway I was wondering if it was likely some caps were going or if possibly it's related to some kind of setting. I tested multiple LDs and CDs against my CLD 2080 and noticed a stark difference. It's more noticeable with voices in particular compared to sound effects. Oddly enough in Robin Hood the voices were still fairly clear but in some other movies (Arsenic and Old Lace, Lupin Fuma, Five Easy Pieces and a few others) and every cd I tested vocals were muffled.

This is happening on both stereo outs and the mono out, I do not have the means to test the AC3. Unfortunately it makes things unwatchable, because to turn the volume up enough for vocal clarity, my ears would be blown out by the rest of the audio.

Figured I would troubleshoot here before potentially asking this guy for a refund.

It has a karaoke function - make sure this is turned off!

I pressed the one touch karaoke button on the face on the player and this has solved the issue. Thank you very much audioboyz. :)

I feel kinda dumb now, as I contacted the poor old guy I bought it from about this.

Many years ago I used to work in Hi-Fi shops selling players, some of which had the voice cancellation mode for doing karaoke with normal music LD's and CD's. Your 'problem' sounded just like that and a quick check of the manual confirmed this player has the feature.

You can get the whole instruction manual here http://manuals.lddb.com/LD_Players/Pioneer/CLD/CLD-D504/CLD-D504-EN_Scan.pdf

Thanks again, I saved the PDF just in case I need to look through it at some point in the future.

Kind of silly that there is no LED indicator for the karaoke function. I hadn't even really noticed that button before. I was thinking I would maybe need a specific karaoke LD remote but I looked over the player and noticed the one touch karaoke button.

There were the full-blown karaoke models which featured a 'K' in the model number, though a few like this one had basic karaoke functions.

The button doesn't have an LED but there should be an indicator in the fluorescent display.

You are correct, it denotes when it is on in the main display. I didn't know think about it or pay it any mind before.
