I picked up Mike Leigh's "Naked" on Laserdisc last week and I have to say that it was one of the best releases from Criterion Collection. The picture quality was just outstanding, as well as the audio, it had some nice extras and the gatefold was beautiful. If you like the film (just like me), this edition would be the one to prefer in my opinion.

Is it OK to resurrect a years-old thread?

Back when they first came out, my favorites were the two John Woo movies, "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled," both of which I ordered new directly from Criterion. But in the years since then, the releases that I've watched the most, which I guess would qualify as my lasting, true favorites, are "Rebecca," "Notorious," "North by Northwest," and "The Great Escape."

Until very recently, laserdisc was the only format I had for "Rebecca" and "Notorious," but I now have the blu-rays. Frankly, though, I can't honestly say the blu-rays look much better. I still only have "The Great Escape" on laserdisc. Great extras on that one. I need to watch it again now, in honor of James Garner.

The CAV Special Edition of Casablanca is just fantastic looking: not a speck on the transfer.

Damage is highly recommended because it contains Louis Malle's only commentary. The transfer is very nice as well. Equal to the DVD.

David Cronenberg's Crash and Dead Ringers are also recommended for their pristine transfers, and Crash's commentary.

Since this topic was brought back up, I'd have to say I'm pretty fond of the Halloween Criterion disc. I'm biased towards the movie as it is, but I like the extras on the disc, including the extra footage from the tv airing. Not needed as a stand alone movie, but nice when paired with Halloween II.

So many faves.

Probably my most played is Eric Clapton in Hyde Park

Movie wise Robocop Criterion is a perfect release. Aliens Special Edition, Die Hard, Predator, True Lies, Star Wars trilogy. All the action classics are best on LD.

Really stunning for a movie from 1938.

Edit: And I didn't even watch the CAV version. Just sent out an order to one of the marketplace sellers here for the fancy gatefold version. :)

My favorite is the triple Gatefold Akira. Trying to replace that as a friend of mine borrowed it and never returned it.

But i do have the CLV version.

I don't know why mint copies are so hard to find or why they always go for insane money.
