Pre-90s anime in general (except for Ghibli) are very rarely shown in movie theaters here in Sweden and especially rare on 35mm. Akira was shown in three cities in a week (Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö) in 2012 and I can't seem to find any other time it has been shown here.

I've always put back owning this anime title for years.
Rented it one day to show my brother, I've only seen it once from a movie channel.
I have a cousin who has it on DVD, he made laughed at one of his classmates who paid $100 for the same DVD he got for $20...
He'll probably laugh at me too, though wouldn't mind that its in a format he's not used to.

I just got a LDP, got Star Wars (I'll get the definitive collection later) and I have to say these are very cool.
DVDs you just put on a cabinet, but LDs like LPs, you can frame them or put them up on a display rack.

I'll try to source a dubbed LD of Akira, but if worst comes to worst, I'll just get the BD version and keep the LD.
I'm not into that much into subs, but I couldn't stand the dub version of Excel Saga, the main character was just annoying to hear in english but OK in japanese.
She's probably annoying if I knew japanese, but since a friend of mine joked that you can't tell bad voice acting when its in another language...

edit: I just read (and I'm sure that all you maestros know) that Critteron releases all their titles with English subtitles.
So if anything I'll nab that one on LD if I get a japanese audio only one.

The Criterion LD of Akira has no english subtitles.
It's dual audio though. The english dub being the old Streamline dub version.
If you buy the BD, you'll get a newly made dub which I personally think is horrible.
But as I generally tend to not like dubs, I might not be the person to ask :P

About Excel... the japanese voice actress of Excel is Mitsuishi Kotono,
which probably is my favorite voice actress of all time.
Amongst the ton of works she did were the voices of Misato Katsuragi
in Evangelion, and of EBICHU (!!!) the housekeeping hamster.

I first saw Akira when it came on Toonami, and that used the newer English Dub. I found it to be pretty decent, but now that I've seen the original Japanese version, I like the Japanese voices much better.

Also, sorry if this is a bit random, but I'm just wondering, does a VCD of Akira exist? Thanks.

That seems strange since i thought Europe VCDs didn't take off like the US but in Asia is popular. Would that be rare?

Not really. I have a PAL UK VCD of Top Gun (Philips CD-i Branded) and it cost me 5 dollars.

I have several of this discs....
I know about Akira because it is listed on one of my discs as "also available"
My discs have the Video CD logo on it, some of them have a sticker that says: "plays on CDI"

So in my opinion, they are normal VCD's

I thought that VCDs without any connection to CD-i so ones without the logo would be rare in europe. CD-i is still pretty rare here in the US but that seemed to be the only way to get VCDs though I know the Japanese market for Sega Saturn also had titles that utilize a VCD card since I got a title before actually getting a card and it played on a DVD player I had.

Having both Criterion release and have yet to get the Japanese set I would say the subs would be closed caption. If you have a BD player and a Walmart close by that has an endcap of anime you can find Funi's release for about $20 which has I believe both US dubs and Japanese with English subs but I'd have to find my copy to be sure. I think there was a n Australian release that had both dubs on DVD and some other stuff but I can't seem to locate one.

So, both CLV and CAV releases have CC's? If so, YES!!! :D There's one thing, though, the back of the CAV jacket doesn't seem to mention CC's anywhere? Also, is it really worth this much? http://www.ebay.com/itm/AKIRA-1987-LASE ... 3cdcc95da1

I have the CAV release in Near Mint. I believe I paid $20 for my copy.

STAY AWESOME! :)
