Criterion reliesed a CAV and CLV edition of Robocop
which one i prefered quality wise?

CAV has always been better for trick play but there is one member on this forum that reported rot for this CAV disc?
Kuraray did they manufacture both disc versions?

this is the CLV disc

Hi I've had the cav version since it first came out.I only watched it a few weeks ago mine played perfect with no rot.Laser-rot with some people has taken on an almost mythical status.I have over 400 laserdiscs and only 3 have definitely had rot.Starship troopers, I know what you did last summer and the animated Robin Hood the cav version. All of which are by DADC USA.

could it be that Kuraray manufactored both CAV and CLV of Robocop?

I just watched Dead Heat, there is no report of rot, mine was nasty!!

The CAV edition is awesome. I've got it and highly recommend it. Playback is great in every way and the gatefold is very nice.

I prefer the clv edition as my main player is a single side hld-x0. Never owned the cav version but the clv has great picture. I often chose it over the 1st print bluray. 2nd pressing bluray is remastered. I own it but haven't watched yet.

Criterions Robocop is one of the best looking lds.

The DVL-909 does have digital memory from what I know, so yes, but you will only get half of the resolution and it will be nowhere near as cool as CAV.

Hi carlosthejackal,

I don't have a copy of that release of Dead Heat, so I can't confirm anything about it. Mine is the Hong Kong release, which was pressed at Pioneer Japan, and it plays flawlessly. I notice that the U.S. release which you have was pressed at 3M. For future reference, anything pressed there during the period from 1988-89 is a possible rot risk. They had some problem with the glue at 3M during that period which caused spots visible to the naked eye on the data layer. It manifested itself on the screen as rot, only more irregularly scattered at various points throughout the disc. I'll bet if you look at the disc you have in the light you will see spots made into the playing surface. Always watch out for anything pressed at 3M in 1988 or 1989! Some of them are fine, but others really SUCK!

Best Regards,
David

hi david
thanks for the input
you're absolutely correct, my Dead Heat has black spots on disc surface.
disc played the entire movie but not without problems!
there was lots of snow and some static intereference

i will mostly stick to japanese discs and only buy few US discs if a certain movie wasn't reliesed on laserdisc in Japan.

were there any bad factories in Japan pressing laserdiscs?
should i expect rot on japanese pressings?

Hi carlosthejackal,

No, in general the Japanese plants were all very good in their quality control. For the most part, you only have to be concerned about the very old Japanese discs. Some of the early ones pressed at Mitsubishi are prone to rot, especially some of those with the reference numbers starting with "G88F" and "G98F". A few of these which I have were hard to find good copies of, and took a while to locate. My opinion is that Pioneer Japan was the most reliable of the Japanese plants overall, with very few rot issues or other manufacturing defects. In fact, I just added a couple of these to my collection this week. Both of them were pressed there in 1983, but they still play flawlessly 31 years later! Kuraray is my least favorite of the major Japanese plants, as I have encountered more rotted discs from them than from the others. Having said that though, in all fairness, almost all of the rotted Kuraray discs I have seen were older ones pressed there during the early and mid-80's. I should also point out that most of them had only very light speckling, and were quite watchable. In general, Kuraray was a very reliable plant, and the discs pressed there during the late 80's and the 90's are mostly quite stunning in quality. I would, of course, recommend that you check any titles you are considering purchasing for their rot status here on LDDb, to see what has been reported, and take that into consideration. If you plan on sticking with mostly discs pressed at the Japanese plants, I suspect that you will have very few problems with laser rot  ! Good luck to you in your quest to grow your collection!

Best Regards,
David

Get the CAV version. The CAV version has tons of great special features at the last half of Side 4, and the transfer is also REALLY good.

The Criterion two disc CAV is still the best home video version of RoboCop I've ever seen. It's uncut, has the correct aspect ratio of 1.66:1 (not even the brand new remastered BD managed to get this right) and features a great commentary with Paul Verhoeven on the analog tracks.

Ridiculously good transfer by LD standards, too:

watched robotcop today, that was a wonderful CAV edition on laserdisc, very cool and gory.
in sweden, watched the rental tape from 1988, this movie was so butchered by swedish censorship all the gore was trimmed down or removed!
entire scene with Emile the freak was removed when he was hit by car in the end of the movie by Clarence Bodicker in the 6000 SUX, that entire scene
was removed from swedish cut
