What is story about these 3 laserdiscs?
Dr. No: Special Edition #124 (1962) [CC1234L]
From Russia with Love: Special Edition #131 (1963) [CC1266L]
Goldfinger: Special Edition #132 (1964) [CC1267L]

Are they pulled back from the stores and replaced without commentary? Why? How many are sold/how long sold?

This site has a good explanation and also all 3 commentaries in .mp3 format for downloading if you want to hear them

I own the CLV editions of the Criterion Bond releases ... they do not have commentary tracks. I believe only the CAV editions have the banned commentary tracks (that were pulled). If you want the commentary tracks ... be sure to buy the CAV ones. Just a head up for those who are interested in the series.

I have these 3 discs  with commentary. Only still curious about the reason for this ban. Albert R. Broccoli felt that the audio commentary tracks on the 3 titles where unacceptable. What was unacceptable?

Thanks for the link btw!

I'm curious about that too. What did he say that was so bad?

Found this info:

Quote:
I believe the problem was that the people on the commentaries speak their minds and don't hold back negitive comments. Like the screenwriter of From Russia With Love calling Ian Fleming a "Snob", or Director Terance Young recalling Chris Blackwell's Pot Smoking habbits.

dadons_rare_laser-discs website lists the following ... under special features for this LD

Quote:
Includes Withdrawn Commentary Exclusive to Only 3 Bond Pressings. Commentary Led to Legal Trouble & Rift Between Criterion & MGM, Causing 3 Year Delay for Robocop Release.

This was a comment left by "roger" in 2004. "DaDon" just downloaded the whole LDDb website (without even asking first) to start his "own" shop. Including typos, wrong references and non-existing titles.

Original comment is on: From Russia with Love: Special Edition #131 (1963) [CC1266L]

Julien

Edit #1: DaDon did import some of the contents back in 2008 but later made a donation to make up for it in 2012.

What was with the numbers (#....) after the title with Criterion? I haven't seen any titles that had alternate numbers but I could be wrong.

I haven't listened to them in a while, but from what I remember, there were some fairly homophobic references uttered, and some unflattering discussions about Sean Connery's sexual appetite.

I have Dr. No and it is the commentary that has been banned. The DVD has some of the commentary but not all of it. Old british salts talking like old british salts. Not that bad. I made a DVD of it with the original commentary.

Interesting topic. I had no idea those editions had banned/unauthorized/etc commentaries. This prompted me to seek them out and I actually found 2 of them LOCALLY for $15 a piece. Not exactly a steal, but I was happy. Just need Goldfinger now...

$15 each for the CAV versions are definitely a steal. $15 is more like what you can expect to pay for the CLV versions. i paid $45 just for my CAV of From Russia With Love, so you got a great deal. good job!

Good to know, thanks :) Hopefully Goldfinger won't cost me $45 to track down.

I'm thinking that's how they priced them out. Everything else seemed to be priced pretty fairly, albeit still a bit too high in my opinion.

That is a steal, my friend. Seriously.

... and the fact that you have somewhere locally to buy laserdiscs. Wow. Thats awesome. If there is anywhere to buy them in El Paso, I have not found it.

Were the CAV versions ever re-printed without commentary?
