Couple of quick questions about this release:

Were the supplementals on this release ported over to the later 2000 New Line DVD and subsequent Blu Ray? Seems the commentary track was as i believe the original 1998 New Line DVD had a different commentary track with just the director.

Seems the only bit of unique material on this release is the excerpts of the :exhausted: John C. Holmes" documentary.

I haven't verified this, but the other day, a collector friend of mine told me that she heard PTA was so annoyed that they couldn't just re-use the commentary from the Criterion LD, that he had someone make a transcript of it and had everyone read what they had said on the old track while recording the new one, just as an F.U. to whoever was preventing the Criterion track from being used again.

haha, that's awesome. My LD copy of the movie US DTS release: Boogie Nights (1997) [ID4415LI] has given up and won't play anymore. I have to seek out the Criterion I think, one of my favourite movies.

I don't know. It doesn't look defective and it played once when I got it. But now every time I try it on both my Sony players it refuses to play. I think I watched it originally on an older Pioneer player I don't have anymore. I've come across a few discs that are very selective on which players they play on. For example Predator would never start on any of my Pioneers but always plays fine on all my Sonys.

 I never had a disc that would refuse to play.

Unless it was so damaged by laser rot that it would simply give up, but that's quite extreme.

Are your players properly calibrated?

An issue I have occasionally encountered on DVD and BR, where the player and the disc simply hate each other, has never happened to me with CD or LD.

What? Seriously? You've never had a disc that refused to spin up despite seemingly being unwarped?

This just tells you that the player is messed up.

All that Sony is better just went out the window if your player can't play such a disc.

I played my Boogie Nights again and I got it to play and put across decent analog audio on one of my current players. Really enjoyed watching it again, laughed so much after the donut shop scene where Buck is buying donuts. I'd totally forgotten that scene.

I still can't get digital audio off the disc, I don't have a DTS decoder currently. Is that why? DTS discs can't output just plain PCM? Depends on the disc?

If you have a DTS disc it’s DTS only or analog. If it’s PAL, if PAL DTS discs exist, then DTS would be it.
