what exactly is a criterion movie? I recently went to a record store and noticed they had a few of those. I didn't purchase any of them but was curious as to what exactly does a criterion movie mean? are they worth looking for? better picture or sound? or just a collectors edition?

Mainly, curation.

They put stuff out that nobody else wants to or they do a better job if previous versions were not great.

These days they put out way fewer things because there are simply less classic/foreign things that need the treatment and major studios put everything out themselves now. Their star has faded somewhat, although not because of them. They still do a great job.

Video quality is usually better than pervious versions but not always great overall or even good if they couldn't get a decent print when they did it.

Quote:
The Criterion Collection, Inc. (or simply Criterion) is an American home video distribution company which focuses on licensing "important classic and contemporary films" and selling them to film aficionados.[3] Criterion is noted for helping to standardize the letterbox format for widescreen films, bonus features, commentary tracks, and special editions for home video.

They kind of pioneered the commercial "Special Editions" and the running commentaries/making of/documentaries/bonuses.

Yeah, Criterion versions appeal for the reasons touched upon.

If a choice between multiple versions, I tend to lean toward the Criterion release most of the time ......

Kubrick over saw the LaserDisc Criterion transfer for Dr. Strangelove personally. That version is LOADED w/ tons of extras thanks to him .......

That link is a good read FYI !

Cheers mates !
