Hey guys,

I was just curious if there is a website out there that gives you the specs of the different CED players out there? If there is no such thing, could you guys recommend a few good CED models? I am just curious what features make a CED player a "good" one. I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Boy, are you fortunate today!!! There are a lot of CED collectors out there that also collect LD's.

So, your best bet is to go to the http://www.cedmagic.com/ website. Cedmagic has a lot of technical information about the CED hardware and software that was manufactured during the heyday of CED (about 1981 to 1986). The forum is also great for chatting with other CED mavens. (Just like the lddb forum).

While you are there, join the forum; it won't hurt.

The top CED players are either the SJT-400 or the SKT-400 RCA models. They were built toward the end of CED and were the best players (IMHO).

That's good advice. You can get a lot more information joining the CEDmagic forum.

SJT/SKT 400 players are considered the top models to get, and I concur that they are great players. They tend to play discs exceptionally well, and have good video and audio reproduction.

The SJT/SKT 200 and 300 series are really good too, as is the SGT 250. The 250 & 300 are wireless remote capable, and use the same remote, but the 400 series uses a different remote.

In my opinion, the sturdiest players made are the Toshiba series, in regards to heavy duty internal parts, and they come in both mono and stereo models with wired remotes. These include the Toshiba made Wards players and Zenith VP 4000, which is very rare.

As mentioned, CEDmagic.com is definitely a good resource for anything CED. For my two cents, I know it's not the best player, but my SGT-100 has been extremely reliable.

Realize that by the standards of an LD collector there really are no "good" players. They are all kinda the same. A large part of this was that CED wasn't around very long so we didn't see the sort of year-by-year progress you saw from LD. They are also a lot closer to a cheap toy than a real piece of AV equipment. Plastic...everything, pretty much, and manufacturing that was a lot closer to a $5 transistor radio than any LD player I've ever seen.

Knowing that...get a stereo one with remote.

I've never used any of em, but the J and K players have a direct drive and better speed control (and hence, a better time base), and only the stereo ones have composite output.

Ergo, a stereo J or K player is what to get.

The J and the K are the code for the years of manufacture. I may be wrong on this; but, J I am guessing is 1985, and K is for 1986. (Please correct me if I am wrong).

From another posting on this forum, there is an owner of both players and he can tell no difference in PQ.

Sorry about that. I got forum mixup fever. I meant the CEDmagic forum not this one. Here is the URL:http://www.cedmagic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2736.

I see that the top 2 RCA models are the SJT and SKT 400 but are there other brand models that might've been better like from Hitachi or Toshiba?

I cannot say if any other manufacturers were any better than RCA. I have the following players with the Hitachi chassis: 934-54780150 and the 934.54810350 and can find little difference in PQ when compared to my RCA SJT-200.

Someone else will have to comment on the Toshiba and the Sanyo players.

I have the Sears (Hitachi) 934.54810350 and other than needing new belts (pickup and loading), I've been very happy with it.

I have a Sears 934-54780150 player that I bought in 1983 and it has been very good. I replaced the stylus and the 2 belts (arm drive and loading) since I have had it.

When the arm drive belt is getting to the end of its life, you will notice that the analog time indicator will be slow to move,. If it is too slow, the internal circuitry will time out. The circuitry is looking for a video signal from the stylus. No signal after a period of time causes the circuitry to return the stylus to its rest position.
