I started collecting Japanese VHDs for much the same reason I collect laserdiscs - there are quite a few unique and interesting music titles to search for.

Unlike laserdiscs, the VHD format is almost unheard of outside of Japan so I've included a picture below to show the relative size of a conventional LD (Beatles) alongside a CED (also Beatles) and VHD (Abba sleeve) as a comparison.

The disc beneath the Abba sleeve is the actual Caddy - like a huge floppy disc in a plastic shell. It usually comes with a paper insert as shown much like Japanese laserdiscs.

Image

The outer packaging in this example consisted of a tight shrinkwrap with a sticker OBI:

Image

The back of the disc mentions digital process. Can someone who knows the technical details of this format elaborate?

Image

From a music collectors perspective there are several compelling reasons to collect this obsolete format:

There are a number of very rare music titles that were only released on VHD and not laserdisc making the VHD version the highest quality version often available.

The quality is genuinely superb - I don't yet have a VHD player but I have DVD copies of several of the VHDs I own (produced by the seller) and even from those I can see the potential of the format. I didn't see a single flicker watching the transfer to DVD and it seems very sharp and clear with great sound. On that basis alone I plan to purchase a VHD player soon.

The covers also have all of the charm of a LD or CED being a large picture format. Many covers are also totally unique so highly collectable.

Here are a few examples of some music titles I have acquired that are not available on laserdisc:

Image

I am a huge fan of Mari Hamada (Japanese female rock singer) so couldn't resist getting hold of these VHDs - again none of these particular Mari titles are available on laserdisc:

Does anyone also collect music VHDs?

Thanks cold_sleeper - I didn't know there was another Mari Hamada VHD. That is good news as she is great!! I'll have to search for that one too.

One thing I noticed with VHD pricing was it seemed to vary quite a bit. Many titles had an original price of 2800 yen which would be significantly cheaper than say the laserdisc equivalent but other titles (like the Mari live concerts) were more expensive (5800 yen). I wonder why?

Thanks again - I've added that to my wishlist as well.
I'd never even heard of Mari Hamada until I bought one laserdisc based on a recommendation I'd read online and I was instantly hooked.
I've most of her CDs as well.

I'll be covering some other excellent Japanese artists I collect in another thread soon.

Did she left a strong impression for me.

The other Japanese artists I will be covering in another topic or topics would be for a range of different music (heavy metal, dance music, j-pop, all female bands etc) from the 80's all the way through to the late 90's. Some of my all time favourite music laserdiscs are Japanese bands.

I'm making payments on a National VHD player. Now I need to start collecting discs. The ABBA Special is high on my list.

So now I'm collecting for the following VideoDisc formats:

CEDs: 15 releases
VCDs: Over 160 COMMERCIAL/NOT BOOTLEG releases
LaserDiscs: 816 releases
DVDs: Nearing 1,600 NTSC and PAL releases

and now VHD: Zero so far, but that will change. LOL!

STAY AWESOME! :)

Keep everyone posted about what you think of the VHD format once your player arrives and you get some discs!

I will do so. In the meantime here is the link to the YouTube video showing the player that I'm buying, and the 3-D headgear as well. You can see it in full operation. The seller made this video, and I just had to have it. :)

Just acquired the holy grail of music VHDs:

Dio: Super Rock '85 in Japan [VDS-M0131]

Front cover:
Image

Back cover with tracklisting:
Image

This was another music title that is available on VHD but not available on Laserdisc.
I searched for this for 7 years tirelessly and until recently had never seen another copy anywhere in the world for sale.

A Dio fansite (http://www.dio.net/biography/discograph ... ideos.html) claims there were 'probably just a few dozen copies made' - I doubt if that is true, however it is extremely hard to find and would sell in an instant to any Dio fan. It also mentions the price for a copy which sold in 2009 for 429 EURO (527 USD). This was always the one I wanted on VHD as it is the highest quality transfer of this exclusive 1985 concert available and has never been re-issued on DVD. An utmost collectible.

Dont understand how a serious collector can state such a comment as there would be only a few dozen made. There is no sense in a company to make less then 500, and I would say 1000 is more closer. There is a lot of work in making masters and artwork, even labels are expensive on low amounts.

But however, there might only be a few dozen that still exist.

Yes I agree - it wasn't me stating that - I referenced a Dio fansite, however try finding another copy anywhere at ANY price!

It's worth mentioning this VHD in this post:
Image

This isn't the movie or a documentary. It is actually the music videos from Streets of Fire plus some further footage about the movie.
What makes this title unique is it isn't available on laserdisc or indeed any other format. So an ideal choice for someone like me who mostly collects music titles.

It also seems this Crusaders jazz title is also unique to VHD and not available on LD:

Sorry LD_fan, might not been so clear from me, I did know it wasn't you. I was referring to the DIO site that wrote it, I actually visit the site as well. ;) I wouldn't mind that title myself. I wouldn't be surprised if its less then a dozen still exist. A japanese family must have saved it for 30 years by now, but I guess some parent might save all their kids stuff if they got space. Would be cool to know what kind of home they come from if they turn up.

BTW, they must have loved the Super rock 84-85 in Japan, hehe. The japanese Monsters of Rock =)
