So I'm soon to be getting an HD-DVD player (yep, so soon after just getting a blu-ray player) and I am always concerned with proper picture calibration for each video format I have (save for VHS and S-VHS--just use the same picture settings as I use for LD and live with that.) I do have Digital Video Essentials for DVD, but wonder would there be an benefit of getting DVE for HD-DVD to calibrate the picture for this format, or will the DVD version work just fine (since it plays throug the same player)? Same goes for blu-ray. |

So I picked up one of these off of Amazon. I'm reading that it doesn't have any instructions on the HD-DVD side with the test patterns, but I've done this so many times with DVD and LD, that it shouldn't be an issue. Definitely going to need this because I was watching Harry Potter and Chamber of Secrets on HD-DVD last night and it looked really, really dark on the Standard preset on my WEGA. |

Yeah, you'd probably need it...or at least two settings for the player (DVD and HDDVD). Although it's the same video chip producing the same opinion of RGB values the basic difference between DVD and HD DVD would probably mean different tunes. DVD is like LD in that you have to tune around artifacts. With HDDVD the picture quality is consistent and neutral. You could run a lot more contrast without seeing the night sky turn to macro block city with HDDVD. I'm not sure if this would actually require different discs, but probably two different calibrations. |
