I own two HDDVD players with old firmware that I have not been able to update. I've downloaded the appropriate firmware, unzipped the .iso file and tried to burn to a multiple types of discs using a variety of methods with no luck.

http://support.toshiba.com/support/mode ... xt=2809957

I've tried CD-R, CD-WR, DVD-R, DVD-RW and tried to burn each with Window Media Player, Windows, and with Power2Go burning software on my laptop.

I've tried to burn as a "data" and as a "video" disc.

When I insert the disc into the player I get a message

"This disc is not DVD format. Cannot play the disc."

What am I doing wrong? I admit, that I rarely if ever burn or rip CDs or DVDs, but this doesn't seem particularly complicated.

Can someone describe the process? Thanks.

I used CD-RW discs to update the firmware on my XE1.
I am guessing that you are doing something wrong in the burning process.
The updates are .ISO files iirc.
Which means you have to use an option called "burn from image" or similar.
It's been forever ago that I did it myself, so I might not be the best person to give advise.

I actually bought a set but didn't use them as I didn't realize they set the output to PAL which I didn't want to do.

What player are you trying to upgrade with new firmwire?
Updates for us models do not change the output I
Do they?

XA2 and A1. I bought from the seller reference in the A35 thread. My memory is a little vague, but it may be that the intent was to turn it into a XE1 and make it region free for DVDs. Got the discs and there were warning labels all over it. I contacted the seller and he confirmed it, I also checked and my TV wasn't one that could accept the unconverted PAL signal.

My XE1 is region free for DVD playback.
It involved some australian firmware for which you had to downgrade to install it,
and then you could install the regular firmware afterwards, and ever since then it
has worked. And yeah, when you switch on the player it is 1080p50 if connected to HDMI.

Still haven't updated my HD-A35 yet... will soon! (same UK seller source)

I don't mind that the firmware defaults the player from NTSC to PAL for DVD replay as long as it removes the region coding.
