Went to a bunch of local record stores yesterday. To my surprise one of them had a pile of HD-DVDs. I picked 25 for a $1 each. I picked some of my Warner titles as duplicates and a few I was missing. Mulholland Drive, Brotherhood of the Wolf, La Haine, Serpico, Nacho Libre were imports. Duplicate copies of HD Digital Video Essentials, Imax: Blue Planet, National Geographic Relentless Enemies were somewhat rare titles.

That's really nice! Wish I could find stuff that cheap, then I would have a lot more HD-DVDs. People over here tend to sell them for at least 3 USD. If it is a closed down video store selling out inventory, then you can add even more to the price.

How come you picked up duplicates, are the discs bad? Out of a houndred or so HD-DVDs, only two are bad in my collection. Don't really find the disc rot thing to be an issue.

They are usually expensive here too. Between 2009-2011, you could find them in most used DVD stores for cheap but no stores accept HD-DVDs as trade-ins anymore. Your only bet is online. So rare I come across a few in stores with a dozen HDs or less. This guy had no idea of their value. Mulholland Drive alone would sell for $25 online.

If I can find them cheap ($1-2 a piece), I like to buy duplicates of HD-DVDs. Also you get better deals if you buy someones collection as a whole (usually less than $1/title). As you can guess, you end up with a lot of duplicates this way. Duplicates are basically back up copies. I haven't counted how many I have but I think I am around 400 individual titles and 50-60 duplicates. I am probably 60-70 short of a complete set (US releases).

Doesn't sound like there were many releases. Guess it is more or less possible to collect a complete US HD-DVD set. How many releases was it in the US?

A lot of the HD-DVDs sold over here were imports from USA. Since HD-DVD doesn't have region codes that was common. However, the DVD part of a combo disc wasn't region free, which is also usually where the extras was located. I'm sure more than one person got frustrated to get the "wrong region" error message and unable to see any extras back in the day, hehe. Ran into that issue when I watched 16 Blocks with Bruce Willis the other day. Wanted to see the alternative ending, but had to switch to a different player.

about 485 in the US. Another unique 238 titles released elsewhere (Half of them NOT English friendly). About 70 adult titles. A couple of dozen demo discs. The 3 major studios make up about 300-350 titles. These are easy to find and cheap. Demo discs, titles from niche studios, adult discs, most imports are very hard to find and expensive.

Combo discs had more defects. Some discs were only playable by HD-DVD rom drives(Wang Kar Wei's 2047 i.e.).

Always good to have a region free DVD player around.

Denon DVD-A1HDCI was supposed to be a true universal player. It was the first BD player from Denon. I was reading every news about it before its release. Until 6 months of its release, all information leaked suggested it was going to be a BD, HD-DVD, SACD, DVD-A player. Unfortunately HD-DVD died before its release and Denon didn't include the compatibility in this player.

The local Rasputin's has HD DVDs for a buck a copy quite regularly. Right now they have about three sealed copies of The Bourne Supremacy with French covers, from Canada I would guess.
