No real loss for me since I've got the Laserdisc but it's a wonderful film that everyone should watch if they ever get the chance. And seeing it on Blu-Ray with a brand new transfer would be irresistible. Hope you gave up resisting https://www.criterion.com/films/28596-a-brighter-summer-dayAlso coming to DVD and BR to Europe. Yeah I know, I followed the Criterion site day after day back in December 2015 when it was announced as we got many hints that it would finally happen. And pre-ordered the US Blu-Ray right away without any doubts whatsoever. Been seeing it every Christmas since then (including once with commentary). It's really fantastic overall. Some of the colors in mid tones can be a bit too greenish for my taste but if that is was Yang initally wanted then so let it be. I believe the Criterion Blu-Ray was released in UK about a year ago or so by now. There are also some more exlusive editions available in South Korea and Taiwan but I haven't looked too much into those. Do yourself a favor and buy whichever Blu-Ray is more accessible to you.

I saw it this summer. Amazing film! Was it the long version that was available on laserdisc?

A proper reliese of Sho Kosugi's uncut version Pray for death 1985 would have been great
Speedtrap 1977 with Joe Don Baker/Tyne Daly/Robert Loggia was never reliesed on laserdisc or dvd Pray For Death was released uncut on blu-ray by Arrow US not too long ago. Surprised as all get out when I was walking through Walmart one day and saw it for sale on the shelf!

gypsy wrote: Reading back through this old thread was interesting. Some movies, like Rockula indeed never got a DVD release, they jumped from LD to BD. I also learned some things like Lady and the Tramp being a 4:3 movie. Cheers. Well, you can't just call Lady and the Tramp a "4:3 movie." It's a bit more complicated than that. Disney shot the movie for both Cinemascope and the Academy Ratio (in case CS didn't catch on.) So there are both wide angle and 4:3 versions of the movie, and the 1998 full frame LD (and the VHS release from the same year) are the only ways to get that Academy Ratio version.

Nope One of the Lady and the Tramp DVD releases has the cinemascope version and a full frame included in one package, but that full frame version is cropped as noted here: Lady And The Tramp: 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition

Yeah. It was a pretty expensive effort to make the movie future proof. Because widescreen was still new at the time it was certainly possible that things would go back to 4:3 at some point meaning any movie that was wide-only would have to be adapated or even worse would become unpopular. I don’t think there are any new elements but Walt spent the extra money to make two different shooting scripts just in case the 4:3 ended up being the preferred version. There aren’t that many movies that were litterally shot twice, especially in animation, but this is one of them. And then then when DVD came around they just cropped the sucker anyway. My lord Disney sucks...I don’t even want to talk about that weird super wide version of Sleeping Beauty they did where there’s never any action that’s as wide as the frame.... Btw, that 4:3 LatT is a really good LD. It has 5.1 and everything.

Yeah, the only other one I can think of is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers which was shot simultaneously for cinemascope and "non-anamorphic 1.85:1" https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/00280/65 ... n-Brothers

There are some early talkies, particularly Laurel and Hardy, where they would shoot a scene in English, then they would cut and shoot it again in German, cut, etc. Back then editing and sync tech was so poor that was the easiest way to do it.

I hope more of this LD->BD happens. Maybe more of those "lost in a fire" anime will suddenly be found and released on BD. What I would not give for a film scanned Project A-ko BD.... Right on. I would pre-order proper A-ko BDs.

Even though my favorite is the fist movie and I've enjoyed 2-4 I would like to have a complete set as I have all the LaserDiscs including VS which isn't as good as the main series. A nice upgrade would be awesome for these as I love A ko, B ko and C ko
