I was just curious i have been collecting Japan laserdiscs recently & noticed that if a movie is around 119 minutes they put it on one disc where the USA pressings usually have a CAV for side 3.

someone else will know more about this, there is another thread about the transfer of films.
i want to say it was CAA or something like that, but there were a few different versions,
the others could fit more info on one side, like the Japanese Blade.

if you do a search on that in the forum you should find it.

It's exactly this point that has made me realize that CAV is not necessarily better than CLV... Someone posted on a thread somewhere that CAV has 5% higher picture quality than CLV...i was suprosed the number was so low...but im starting to believe it....

I always wonder why the majority of my music discs are one sided...especially the short 30 minute discs could very well be CAV...

So ill ask here the question again..is soundany better on a CAV disc than a CLV disc???

Can I hijack with a quick question that is probably obvious -- but I am noobtastic?

I am surfing ebay, and there's Japanese releases that say "in English, with Japanese subtitles". Can the subtitles be turned off when viewing?

That would be no. Usually Japanese subtitles are part of the image when recorded to LD.

No, sound on CAV and CLV/CAA is exactly the same - both use the exact same EFM Compact Disc encoding for the digital sound and the disc format doesn't affect the FM analog audio carriers. CAV's improvement comes from increased video S/N as the laser reaches the outer tracks and can be as much as 4db higher at the outside tracks as opposed to the inside - to accommodate this, CAV uses strong pre-emphasis at the beginning of the disc that gradually decreases as the laser reaches the outside.

I'm not sure how anyone could quantify "picture quality" so precisely that they could actually assign a value like "5%" to it.

CAV gives you flawless still frame and multi-speed. That's the main advantage. It's also inhearntly immune to cross talk which, depending on how good/bad your player is can make a huge difference.

Sign, does that equate to...the better your player the less the difference CAV makes...the worse your player is the more of a difference it makes... Would that be right?

The more out of alignment your player is, the worse CLV discs will look.
