During 2012 I managed to pickup a few late release films on laserdisc.

Some of these were Japanese releases, others were US titles and a few were older movies that had been given a late release or re-issue on laserdisc.

I use the term late release very loosely but most of these movies were released on laserdisc from 1995 - 2001.

First the Japanese releases, most of which are regularly discussed on the forum:

There are actually many late release LDs that rarely get a mention but which I wanted to add to my own personal collection such as:

Then there are some late US releases:

Again a few of these don't often get discussed on the forum so I thought I'd list them separately for anyone interested:

A few stragglers that I just happened to find that are also worth listing:

Then there were the late releases of older movies - some never released on LD before, others re-issued with pristine picture and sound.
I was particularly pleased to get a copy of 'Foxes' which was an early movie featuring Cherie Currie from the Runaways.
The other fox themed movie 'Foxy Brown' was one of those must have Blaxploitation movies from the 70's that was released very late on laserdisc.

Image

Most of my focus is still music LDs but I was pleased to be able to find these films on LD as I have previously collected many on DVD long before I ever got into laserdiscs.
I was always a big fan of the 90's teen movies which kick started the whole 80's brat pack thing all over again with many of the 80's actors starring alongside the newer
actors from the 90's so cool to have those on LD.

Thanks to all the sellers and other people who I was able to acquire these from and also anyone who offered trades/swaps last year. Hope we can do some more business together this year.

I've some duplicates of a few of these titles so if anyone is interested feel free to contact me at any stage if you are after a particular title.

I hope to continue this collection of laserdiscs in 2013.
Any suggestions for other late release movies to collect?

great stuff, some of these i remember seeing in theatres but never knew that they were released on LD in US or Japan.
that's how out of LD collecting i was at the time, it's not that i was into DVD just not into much film collecting.

the only one that i own is: the last man on earth / panic in year zero.
i have yet to watch panic in year zero, but i guess i should and post a review, i did scan throught it and was amazed at the PQ how clear it is
on both of those films.

I was amazed myself at just how many made it to laserdisc, especially the teen flicks from the 90's. There are lots of others in fact.

I remember seeing the nuclear war film 'The Day After' back in 1983 on a Saturday night.
It chilled me to the bone - probably left me scarred for life so I just had to see it again on laserdisc for old time sake as it was such a powerful statement.

Good suggestion - not at the moment but would be love to add that in the future.

Some were fairly easy and cheap to obtain, others I hit it lucky and managed to find them at decent prices, a few I had to raid my savings to buy!!

There are a number of themes running throughout the titles shown that I touch upon but are likely not that obvious to anyone else.

Firstly there are certain actors/actresses that I like to collect all the films they ever starred in (warts 'n all) that are available on laserdisc such as:
Reese Witherspoon
Alicia Silverstone
Adam Sandler
Mira Sorvino
Matt Dillon
Rachael Leigh Cook
Marisa Tomei
Neve Campbell
Elizabeth Hurley (don't laugh!!)
Jennifer Aniston
Christian Slater
Robin Tunney
Jack Nicolson
Liv Tyler
Kiefer Sutherland
Fairuza Balk
Kate Beckinsale
Jennifer lopez
Michael Caine
Renee Zellweger
Drew Barrymore
...
many others on this list from other era's.

It is a massive list so very much a work in progress at the moment but I have like a family tree thing going on with branches for each of those actors/actresses.
I am filling out th twigs at the moment!

I also collect many other titles that have a link back to my music collection - on either CD or laserdisc. Some might be because of the soundtrack or they starred in a movie.

A further connection is to brat pack movies - albeit 90's ones in the pictures shown above. I love all those movies and have a massive collection - many hundreds so far.

Still further have left their impression in my memory from childhood when I first saw them. Again more of these types of movies are not late releases but a few above do crop up like 'The Illustrated Man' or 'The Day After'.

Found a few more:

Image

Empire Records - almost the perfect movie for me with Robin Tunney, Renee Zellweger & Liv Tyler all in the same film.
Fantastic soundtrack and brat pack like theme all about a record store closing down. It doesn't get any better!!
Had to get all 3 versions of it - Singapore, Japan and US editions. US edition features several music videos of tracks included in soundtrack.

Another all time favourite movie of mine is Soylent Green. Hope they never attempt to remake it as it could never be bettered.
Version shown is the last ever Japan release made in 1999.

Also I'm a huge Vincent Price fan. Conqueror Worm is in fact Witchfinder General from 1968 released on laserdisc in 1997.
Forgot about the Nicolas Cage remake and stick to the original classic!

i agree with you on soylent green, when i was a kid i didn't care that much for it.
but i saw it 2 years ago and it was great, i feel it ended a little too fast but still great.

i feel that a lot of 70s films had this problem, they had a great begining and middle but the end was sort of too quick.
i picked up yul brynner the ultimate warrior on DVD, great film but it was rushed at the end with still shots to finish the story.
almost like the ran out of money or something, but still a fun film.

but again great stuff that you posted ldfan

Any of the DADC titles shown are perfect - I only buy from trusted sellers who verify playback in advance.

Hi cold_sleeper - you've beautiful sets of related movies just like I collect. We have a lot in common!
I love those types of movies.

I hunted down some other late release LDs in my collection which I also bought in 2012.

First some more Japanese laserdiscs:

Image

Image

Space truckers with the late Dennis Hopper and the lovely Debi Mazar doesn't get mentioned very often and is a great sci-fi movie.

Then some more US or UK releases:

Image

Image

Then some older films re-issued on LD in the late 90's or remakes of older films such as the Island of Dr. Moreau:

Image

Finally a few remaining ones worthy of showing:

Image

As a big Twisted Sister fan I had to get Strangeland featuring Dee Snider.
As an Alyssa Milano music fan I also collect any movies she starred in.
The Dead Next Door although made in the 80's was not issued on LD until 1998.
