I lost faith in the "THX certification program" for movie theaters when I saw Star Wars Episode II in Japan ... with a broken speaker and a projector out of focus.

Ding ding ding. Shame. Shame. Shame.

Previously I used to love the first THX certified theater in France -- maybe even Europe (Max Linder, projection/sound systems details in French here). Then they lost the certification, then they got it again, then they just gave up: the cost of keeping all the hardware in line with the specs was too much.

But it's run by a bunch of nice people who are all real movie lovers. They allowed me to visit the projection room once during a slow day, explaining the synchro of the DTS CDs (timecodes), the backup system to Dolby Digital tracks read on the side of the reel and ultimately the stereo tracks on the reel (it was a 35mm copy). I think the movie was "Lost Highway".

I've been to a THX certified theatre recently where the image was trapezoid-shaped. Worst of all, it was a double feature. Had to sit through two movies like that.

I thought that THX was a good idea except that was before the real world reared its ugly head.

RIP THX.

The decision to buy a release will now be predicated as to whether the release has a Criterion version. Since I rarely buy art-house or foreign films, I guess the presence of a Criterion release for a particular film is unlikely. For me, this leaves whether to choose the CLV or the CAV release. Since the CAV release is usually associated with box sets, I will be looking for the box set for a movie first before buying the CLV.

Now, I have a copy of The Aristocats that I got yesterday that has a chunk taken out of the edge of the first disc (the movie is the 2 disc CAV version). The "chunk" looks like someone took a bite out of the edge of the disc. I guess I will have to contact Amazon about this situation. I hate the hassle of repackaging the LD and taking it to the post office for return shipping. The cost of ~ $15 is on the edge: should I keep it and swallow the loss or return it to get my $ back.

When the almighty AFI Silver upgraded to play back DCP in 2013, their digital presentations had quite the trapezoid effect also. I never seen any film presentation there that had that sort of issue. Maybe THX calls it the Deep Slant(TM).

Personally, after living threw the dark years (the early 80s) of the cinema experience, I was glad that THX came along and help make going to the movies a wonderful event again.

The THX stamp on a LaserDisc was a stamp to assure a quality product, but with deadlines and people involved perfection was hard to achieve, in the end it made for better LDs.

THX recently certified Cinemark's XD theaters, so they are still at it. I have one near me but there hasn't been a movie in the XD theater yet that I'm willing to sit through.
I'll post back after I've been. I go way back, and remember the original THX program. I sought out THX theaters back in the '80s and '90s, and saw many 70mm blow ups along with some archival 70mm prints in THX theaters. The AFI Silver (Wash. D.C.) is still THX certified and regularly shows 70mm film. I saw Dunkirk there last year. They still use a curtain, and have one of the best equipped booths in the business.
