I want to buy a copy of the Disney's Little Mermaid. What is confusing are the various laserdisc versions produced:

Stereo Laserdisc (CLV)
Stereo CAV Laserdisc
Fully Restored (CAV)
Fully Restored, Collector's Edition (CAV)

In your personal opinion (taking into account its price), which would be the best to purchase. I am interested in the best PQ.

In looking at the above 4 examples, I think that the Stereo CAV Laserdisc is my first choice with the Fully Restored version a close second.

I would take my chances on the Stereo CLV. I like the one hour per side on CLV discs. I think it's a good compromise as the quality loss is very subtle. The earlier pressing is likely to be less molested. The word "remastered" scared me on LD.

Neither is particularly good. The later ver is as grainy as the earlier version is blury. It was a very low-end movie for Disney and it has seams everywhere. Both sound great.

Get CAV if you like to frame-by-frame, CLV if changing discs annoys you.

Good info. It sounds like the early version have gone through some chemical processing on the film reel before scanned. Before the era of digital noise reduction, chemicals were used on the film to degrain. Early pressings are p&s too.

On the later ones, the original aspect ratio is there at 1.66:1. DVD and Blurays crop that to 1.78:1. There is a Japanese release from 1992. Its lbx and stereo. I am curious about how this one now.

I think the CAV fully restored is going to be my choice. Now, if they weren't so darn expensive.

Through my own fault, I now own 3 copies of Beauty and the Beast: 2-CLV, and the CAV that was shown at the New York film festival (A Work in Progress). I ordered the latter and then ordered the CLV version without realizing that I already had a CLV version. This was one instance when I did not check my inventory before ordering. I will learn someday.

That's got be the highest price for a Disney LD? "The Sixth Day" is listed on the site for $5,700.00

I saw a youtuve video where it shows the differences in the titles being re-edited to appear at newer times rather than the original. The LD of this is it true to the release print. Its not been altered has it?

Not exactly The Little Mermaid or the same price range, but City of the Living Dead: Limited Edition (1980) [EC1005-LD] sold for about 360 USD in auction at the Laserdisc Convention. Alcohol was involved in this case, however.

I just got my copy of The Little Mermaid in the mail. I bought the CAV, Fully restored in the Widescreen format. The gatefold is in very good to excellent condition. It looks like the cellophane had just been removed. The best part is that the LD cost $3.50 plus $4.09 shipping. There are still bargains out there.

I now have to play the LD's to complete my review.

Glad to hear you got it for a cheap price.
I personally hate overpaying for common titles even if they are a late limited release, i don't feel they are worth more just nice to own.
