Well out of my budget.

Was watching the auction as it happened, kind of in awe and a little disbelief as the bids kept going up and up. Knew it was quite rare and sought after but was kind of expecting more like 50-100K JPY. The highest sale price for an LD I've seen on YJP by about x5.

I didn't see the auction. Out of interest what was the final price? Sounds like the auction must have been quite an event to watch.

It ended at 253000 yen, or about 1766 quid with the current exchange rate.

You wish you blew $2500 on an LD? Then why didn't you?

You're not...poor, are you?

Let me spell it out for you signofzeta - Since you asked lol - Wishing it was me that was putting that title on my shelf ........... One of my fav movies with Stamp .....

N$A had one for $500 several years ago....... Also wishing that I had bought that copy for your knowledge.

What do you care whether I am poor or not signofzeta........ ? I will bite though ...
Am I poor ? Poor is a state of mind in my opinion, being broke is temporary .... if anyone is willing and able to work .......
It has been a long while since I have been broke for your information ......
Really ?

Normally I enjoy your sarcasm.
Bad day ?

Some spend money on a tv that they dont need. Some spend it on a pc thwy dobt need. Some spend 1000euro a month on a car when you can get one for 300euro.

Some spend it on an ld they want. I dont see any wrong with that. But as long as you spending it, its good for the economy.

Signo need to take it easy and respect that some dont got the same view as he om collecting ld.

We need to start being more humble to each other in here.

I didnt make this thread to make fun of the buyer, or call him names. I just wanted to know who wanted it the most. And vong. It will be many years before another one shows up.

Very true.

Also a new TV, PC or car bought when this movie was released in 2001 is worth virtually nothing today, whereas that LD has increased substantially in value.

The price of late releases has been rising steadily over the years.
No surprise really given nearly 20 years have passed since they were issued and they will never be issued again in this format.
When I started collecting these movies in 2012 there was a copy of the Limey listed on LDDB.com for about $685.
It was missing OBI and had some cover wear so no one bought it.
I could name 200 other titles in the exact same situation. That's life. You snooze, you lose.

Now in 2017 a copy with a crinkled OBI sells for $2500. Am I surprised?...not in the slightest and it wasn't me who bought it, but I think whoever did got a bargain since every other late release has increased in value and that particular title was a lot rarer than most.

My personal feelings on this situation are completely different than what I feel for the whole world.

This just means that people are starting to let go of their money, pre 2008 crash.
Saw an episode of Antiques Roadshow here in the USA and the guy was talking about value pre crash and what is it now, or a few years ago.
Stating that those prices may never come back in the collector market.

I'm so happy to see that others are spending and making the money like before the crash and look forward to having that wealth go around. :P

I'm not condemning it...totally...I'm just trying to understand it.

A car that costs a grand a month COSTS MORE TO MAKE than one that is 300 a month. It's price was the factor of literally millions of decisions. It requires more man hours. It requires more materials, more expensive processes, etc. It is not simply guessed at by a half dozen colectards who always pick a higher number than they did last time.

There are reasons things costs more than other things. REAL reasons, not eBay reasons, real reasons, and you're never going to get something as good as a $1000 a month car for $300 either.

This LD was $60 when it came out and now Firehorse is sad it missed out on paying $2500 for it. It is value is determined by wanton zeal, no other economic factors play a part. It's all speculative superficial hype. Last Xmas someone gave me a guitar that originally cost $2500, the comparisons to a $60 guitar are...few, lets put it that way. It spent a week or more in the factory where it was almost totally hand made my masters. This LD has 0.1 man hours in it and shot out of a machine by the thousands.

And if you want to check back in ten years to compare how the value of Gibson Acoustics track compared to LDs, I'll be here.

It seems, pretty clearly, that when comes to LD the commodification of the property is desirable to some people. The fact is the price going up and him paying more is more exciting than actually watching any movie could possibly be for him. People are actually PROUD of having won and auction, of the simple act of pressing a button. It could be anything, a rock, a twig, what matters is the $$$.

LD Forever! (Because nobody will let me pay $2500 for a Bluray)

I guess if he's a legit millionaire who won't feel it then that's one thing, but anyone for anyone making a normal look living this is really....questionable behavior.

Actually, that's not always true. For instance, the Aston Martin Cygnet is the exact same car as the Citroen C1. Or Toyota Aygo. Or Peugot 107. The difference in price is ridicilous but you still get the exact same car. If you're a die hard Aston Martin fan it may be what you want but personally, I'd rather spend those pennies to get a nice Volvo instead.

I really wonder if it had any pizza dirt or if the crinkled obi was the only issue

Post subject:  Re: Who got The Limey on yahoo ?

I'm no millionaire either!

I like a bargain same as most people, so I set myself the goal to obtain the complete set of PILF-28xx's for zero cost eventually.
It was actually just an extension of what I've been doing with the music titles for a long time. Originally when I started collecting them I had a long list of titles I wanted. To be honest I didn't think I'd ever be able to obtain them but I persevered and made steady progress each year.

I would spend maybe 6 months focusing on specific genre's one by one whether it was rap, thrash metal, soul or even country music. Each year I revised the list to add new titles I had become aware of that existed. My music want list is now quite small after 12 years of very intense collecting so around the half way mark (2012) I started to include some movies as well, which I had previously never collected on laserdisc. I don't want to reveal too much about the remaining titles in my wishlist but in general most are easier to locate than many of the music titles as they seemed to sell in far larger numbers. It's rare to find even 5 people who own a really sought after music title whereas many movies are owned by dozens of people.

For the music titles I started with the rarest first and worked my way backwards, primarily because those titles were not getting any cheaper and the supply of the best titles was very scarce. I adopted the same approach for the rarer movies except where prices were beyond me and I had to pass them by at the time. I've only 3 remaining PILF-28xx titles to collect now so I think in general the approach worked. I never set any kind of timeline for completion but what I own to date has taken about 5 years to gather with the main focus still on music titles. By way of example I gathered over 4000 new music titles from around the world during that same period so those easily dwarf the movies.

Along the way I also gathered duplicates of the very best titles (music and some movies) with a view to sell them to help recoup my costs. I had an active shop on LDDB.com for about 8 years which was very successful - even after being shut for 2 years I'm still number 6 in the top 100 feedbacks on the forum. I suspect if I had remained open I would have been a little higher but I had other things to deal with during that period so did not have the time to keep the shop running.

At some stage though I do plan to re-open my shop again and you might just see some of the rarest and most sought after music and movies reappear that have not been available for sale for a very long time............
