Update:

A few weeks ago, I was PM'ed by a guy that had a copy of 2001 on VCD and wanted to know if I wanted it. I replied yes and he advised me that the postage was $10 which I sent to his mother-in-law in Missouri. (His wife is American and she is due to visit her mother next month). Anyway, I just got the VCD today. I will try to play the VCD on my Sony UBP-X800 player and I will report on my results. My DVD changer can play VCD's so I would think that the X800 could play a VCD.

More later.

More into:

The Sony UBP-X800 will play VCD discs. I played 2001 on VCD and the sound and video came through. Now, as to PQ, I cannot say it is great. The PQ is lower than LD; but, better than VHS IMHO. What is funny is that at the start of disc 1 (there are 3 discs) there is a commercial for DVD discs. Can anyone say "Ironic".

I have personally played the following discs on a Sony UBP-X800: CD, VCD, DVD, BD and UHD(4K). I want to test SACD and DTS 5.1 discs; but, I am not setup right now to test them. By the way, the UHD disc gives an amazing PQ when played by the X800 and displayed on a 1080 HDTV. I would like to see the same picture on a 4K set. Maybe some day.

The 5.1 versions of Royal Space Force come with that sort of sheet that tells you about Dolby Digital and whatever but also an ad for the DVD version of the same movie you just payed $150 for. :)

I forgot to mention that the VCD came from Hong Kong as per the mail packaging and is a Warner Bros.production.(as marked on each disc). The packaging is a 3 disc jewel case and is labeled both in English and Chinese (I am guessing here(. The sound is normal, the dialog is in English with Chinese subtitles displayed on the bottom of the screen. I get the impression that the VCD is attempting to look high quality. If only the PQ would be the same.

Glad it arrived safely :D

Warner put a bit more effort into their VCD releases than other companies (or perhaps that's because its Kubrick?). Typically recent VCD releases (yes, they still release them) come in cardboard cases with a separate plastic tray to hold the disc. Rarely do they have a jewel case with a cardboard outer case as per 2001. I don't think Warner release any VCDs now and it's onyl a couple of local HK distributors who do.

"2001" was also on VHD. You didn't mention it in your original post.

I guess that I should have been more specific.

I do not have a VHD player so I did not include VHD with the other formats that I own. I might add VHD if I could find a copy that is in good shape and not too expensive. For now, VHD will be a pipe dream for me. I have seen VHD players on E-bay; but, the prices have been sky high.

Maybe, I will buy a VHD player after I win the lottery (ROFL) so that I could buy a VHD copy of 2001 for it.

Just saw this.
Dunno if that's a good price. Probably not. But import costs on buyee or another proxy most likely let the cost of a Yahoo Japan buy rise above it.

I plan on putting the 3 VCD discs of 2001 into my DVD changer (Sony DVP-CX850D). Some years ago I bought the 2 VCD's of Star Wars Episode 1 and placed them into the changer. I then watched disc 1. At the end of disc 1, I got up to manually change to disc 2 when the changer beat me to it. It changed to disc 2 and started playing without my interference. Later, I found out why. The changer thinks that VCD's are CD's. It appears that the changer plays CD's in order of slot number and I had the 2 discs with disc 1 in we will say slot 10 and disc 2 in slot 11. So the player is programmed to play slot 10 followed by slot 11. Also, the software allows me to group discs with common traits. I plan on setting up a VCD group and adding Star Wars Episode 1 and 2001 to it and any other VCD's I may get in the future.

FYI:
I just had a Cardiac Catheterization last Thursday. The procedure is not too bad except for the pre-procedure steps: Take this drug, don't take those drugs, no food after midnight, bring clothes for a possible overnight hospital stay, etc. I had to have 2 stents installed on one heart artery. I am now resting. I cannot lift anything weighing over 5 pounds for 5 days after the procedure. I cannot go to the dentist for 3 months. I am supposed to carry a card that lists the stents installed. Ugh!

I guess the above is good as I was heading for a heart attack in the future and the stents should avoid one.

brmanuk:

Again, thank you for the VCD's. I was reluctant to give my credit card and personal info to an overseas website (Yesasia) or I would have bought 2001 from them. It just did not feel safe to me.
