Post subject:  Was there ever a copy of 2001 made on the CDV or VCD format?

I have copies of 2001 on the CED, Laserdisc and HD-DVD formats. I just ordered a Blu-Ray copy off Amazon. That leaves me lacking the VHS, the DVD and the CDV or VCD versions. I know I can get the DVD off Amazon or E-bay with no problem. The VHS may be a little more difficult. The CDV or VCD are really questionable. The Ultra HD (4K) version is not out (that I know of).

My question: Was there ever a CDV or VCD made of the movie?

I did a google search and did find that 2001 was printed on the VCD format. However, the website is out of stock. Would anyone know of a supplier for 2001 on VCD?

Very interesting, wonder if it would have been on 2 or 3 discs.
Please post if you pickup one of these, would love to see it.
My guess would be to check other countries of ebay from those country sites directly.

Try this link: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjE4MWT2_LUAhVoxlQKHQStAEwQFgguMAM&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webmallindia.com%2Fbuy-vcd-online-english-movie-2001-a-space-odyssey-p-12724.html&usg=AFQjCNEYmWYI5xS9qn5vTP5rMEmowgXxIw

There is some confusion with the above URL. You can buy the VCD or do a download. The VCD is 2 discs with PAL recording. The download sounds free; but, you will have to tell me if it is. Farther down the page, it states that the download is not available.

If you can play VCD's in PAL, go for it. The price (Rs. 299) is unknown to me.

Thanks for the URL. If you are in North America, use this URL: http://www.yesasia.com/us/stanley-kubrick-collection-2001-a-space-odyssey/1002932664-0-0-0-en/info.html.

The only question I have about the VCD's is whether they are NTSC or not. I cannot seem to find the info. Maybe, I will have to send them a message asking that information. I must say that the price is very reasonable ($7.49). The chinese subtitles are not a concern as long as the dialog is in english.

Why do you mention CDV? That one can only hold 6 minutes of Video. Or do you mean a trailer of the Movie?

Page says the VCD is from Warner Hong Kong. I've never encountered a non-NTSC VCD from Hong Kong.

I might be interested in your VHS copy. (I am not concerned about the release version.)

Where are you located? I see you are from New York State. It would be a long shot if you were within driving distance from me. I do have some VHS sealed tapes for trade: Bill & Tedd's Excellent Adventure, Predator and *batteries not included. The other prerecorded tapes I have are used; but, in good condition. Examples are: Star Trek I, II and III; Who Framed Roger Rabbit; The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour; etc.

Let me know.

Thank you for that info. Now, all I have to do is create an account and arrange a payment method, etc.

Again, I got the 2 formats mixed up. I have Star Wars 1 on VCD. I was wrong to call it CDV. I corrected my inventory spreadsheets to reflect this. I had to go to Wikipedia to figure out which was which.

I saw a copy the Hong Kong VCD of 2001 myself. It is the exact same copy as can be seen in the link provided by elahrairrah.

The entire Stanley Kubrick collection was released by Warner Hong Kong. I have the Shining on VCD myself.

Many many films were released on VCD. If you feel like owning it, just buy it. I am sure it only costs like 20 HK $ in Hong Kong. It is a legit product with a really nice
cover.

I have seen PAL VCDs from Hong Kong before btw. Mostly German or French movies that probably had a PAL master and were released on PAL VCD discs. You have to remember that
the TV standard in Hong Kong has always been PAL and not NTSC. NTSC was only used for Laserdisc and VCD in that territory.

The only reason to ever own VCD was to get stuff that was unobtainium otherwise. ie foreign movies in the '90s. If you had the choice of ANY other format, why would you collect VCD just for collecting purposes?? Terrible PQ, no cool players, just a mediocre product not worthy of collecting.

I still have the Fruit Chan movie Made in Hong Kong on VCD and I'm keeping it for the meantime because the HK market DVD has either never been released or is OOP so long no copies exist in the market (can any of you prove me wrong?) ..btw I don't want to own any European releases of anything either.

Post subject:  Re: Was there ever a copy of 2001 made on the CDV or VCD for

The only reason that I want 2001 on VCD is to complete a set of the movie in the various formats that it was produced on. The VCD would be the smallest and the LD would be the largest physical format.

I have a David Bowie CDV that I keep to show that LD video and CD audio were produced on a 4.5 inch disc. I am not certain if that size is still being produced or is a defunct format. I know that I cannot play the CDV on my LD players because of the problem that this thread addresses; but, the CDV is a great conversation starter.

I think 1991 or 1992 the last 5" CDV's were made. I've got a few VSD's that say 1991 on them. That is from Japan. (VSD's technically just being CDV's but with the cd audio track as 4 seconds silence and track 2 the ld video)
In Europe i believe stopped a bit earlier, like 1989 or something. When i finally got money as a student in 1991 to buy cd's and stuff i went looking for those 'golden' discs in the Free Record Shop in The Netherlands, but the salesman said that they dissed those in 1990 or so. :( Plus i didn't have the equipment then to play the video of those discs as many teenagers at the time didn't have as well, what was one of the reasons it didn't catch on at that well at the target audience.

It was a very shortlived format, so let's say from 1986 to 1992.

"2001" was also on VHD. You didn't mention it in your original post.

I guess that I should have been more specific.

I do not have a VHD player so I did not include VHD with the other formats that I own. I might add VHD if I could find a copy that is in good shape and not too expensive. For now, VHD will be a pipe dream for me. I have seen VHD players on E-bay; but, the prices have been sky high.

Maybe, I will buy a VHD player after I win the lottery (ROFL) so that I could buy a VHD copy of 2001 for it.

Thanks for that info. I haven't been back to this thread in a while. I did find a copy of 2001 on VHS on E-bay that I am eyeing right now.

The only movie I have on VCD is Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. The 2 discs for the movie are in my DVD changer right now. The first time I played the movie I gave the DVD changer the disc number to load and it did the load and started playing. I watched the first disc with no problems. At the end, the changer unloaded the disc and then loaded disc 2 and started playing it. Mind you, the last 2 steps the player did on its own. I found out later why: the changer thinks that the VCD discs are CD's and plays them accordingly even though there is video and audio present. I wasn't prepared for such action. When you go to the changer's OSD for CD's, you find the Phantom Menace listed as a CD.

I recently bought a Sony UBP-X800 player which can play a multitude of disc (CD's, DVD's, BD, 3D BD's, UHD, etc.). Sometime, I am going to take the above VCD's and try them in the X800 player. It might surprise me and read the discs. Since my DVD changer can play the VCD's, I should think that the X800 could.
