All of the EMI or Toshiba EMI Japanese music releases I own have a little coloured dot on the bottom edge of the spine. You see this on early releases such as Queensrÿche: Live in Tokyo (1984) [L098-1019] all the way through to the very last releases such as this released in 2000 Queen: Greatest Flix III (1999) [TOLW-3316].

The really old ones from the 80's also have the same coloured dot along the top edge to the far right.

Anyone know what the colour of the dot signifies?

Hi Colin

Side 1:red dot
Side 2:blue dot

So expect to make ensure no wrong sides and correct labels

Hi Edwin,

The dot I'm referring to is on the actual sleeve (the bottom of the spine) and seems to have a range of possible colours.
I've seen black, white, red and pink so far.
e.g.
Duran Duran - Working for the Skin Trade - black dot
Duran Duran - 6x3 - red dot
Duran Duran - Extraordinary World - black dot
John Lennon - Video Collection - white dot
John Lennon - Imagine The Film - red dot
Eurythmics -Savage - pink dot
Human League - Greatest Hits - red dot
Go West -The Runaway Tour - red dot
Big Country - The Seer Live -red dot
Enigma - The Complete Video Album - white dot
Brigitte Bardot - B.B en Chansons - white dot
Dizzy Mizz Lizzy - white dot

Initially I thought it might be genre, then release year approx, then price range but none of these fit.

The only thing I found it useful for was locating EMI titles as it is really quick to scan a shelf and find all matching EMI releases based on the coloured dot and general spine colour. It's certainly far quicker than having to interpret Japanese text or a split spine where you can't read the text.

Hi Colin

Went through my collection, also couldn't crack the colour code yet, there are also blue dots around (eg Whitesnake TOLW-3278).

Early Discus laserdiscs like Foreigner Super Rock (green dot), ELO (light blue dot so possibly green faded) and REO Speedwagon live (green dot) also had these coloured dots but they were slightly higher up on the jacket spine. I don't think these were related to the convention used by EMI.

It's pretty incredible all EMI Japanese releases had these coloured dots on the spine from the start to the very end of the format and their purpose remains a complete mystery even to this day.

Could it be some type of music, soft rock or something like that???

Or what about year released??? certain colors with different years?
Very interesting overall.
