Post subject:  Question about Star Wars time-compressed P&S releases

Does anyone know if there is any difference between the first two time-compressed US releases of Star Wars in P&S? The first one is the Fox release from 1982, while the second is the CBS/Fox release from 1983 (both with the same catalog number of 1130-80). There was also a third time-compressed P&S release in '92... which is definitely different from the first release (different P&S transfer and maybe pitch correction applied too)... but I don't have a copy of the second release to compare against them.

The second release is the only US release of Star Wars I'm missing from my collection and I'm trying to convince myself that I don't need it ;)

There are actually 2 versions of the 20th Century Fox (1982) release, one in CLV and one in CAA. The CAA edition and the CBS/Fox (1983) release are the same. The later release from 1992 is the same except they added Digital Sound.

Wow, just read about CLV and CAA, I always though they were the same just one was the name for the public and the other for the company use.

Is there anyway to look at the disc to see if its CAA or CLV?
Very curious to see what I own.

Close - CLV was the public name for both, but CLV continuously slows down the disk, while CAA uses discrete graduations to reduce crosstalk.

CAA disks can be spotted by the small number of CAV frames (and associated visible sync patterns) at the beginning of a side.

Thanks for info blam1!

When doing my comparisons, I think I found some other differences between '82 and '92 releases. The actual panning and scanning seems to differ, while some of the shots seem slightly more squeezed in the '92 release (the sequence where the droids depart in the escape pod show off both of these differences).

Apparently the movie was transferred a second time for the original CAV release (as converting the time-compressed version to CAV was causing technical issues) and I think that second transfer was later time-compressed yet again for the '92 release... it at least looks that way from the comparisons I've done. They also managed to pitch correct the sound, which may have been a fairly new thing from them to be able to do at the time in the digital domain (everyone sounds just a little Smurfy in the '82 release... and the original time-compressed release of Empire is even worse).

Either way, it looks like I'll have to eventually get the '83 CBS/Fox release. The completest in me just won't let it go.

Hello. I'm unaware of any difference between the 82 & 83 P&S releases. BTW = they are identical to the CED releases. You are correct - the framing is different in the 92 CLV EP release than the 82/83 - but that because it's actually the same framing - as in - re-issue - that was used w/ the Early Original CAV SP release.

Besides the differences in the Pan & Scan framing - Yes - the 1st pressings in 82/83 squeezed more of the widescreen shot into the frame - wherein the CAV & 92 reissue were cropped. Case in point - Luke's MB450 macro-binoculars.
