I sold my karaoke unit CLD 2710k to local NZer and he is also after discs,
Im gonna give him some of the few doubles i have,

One of which is Independence Day.

I have this copy very tidy missing OBI
Independence Day: ID4 (1996) [PILF-2383]

Also have this sealed
Independence Day: ID4 (1996) [0411885]

Does either have a better Transfer with sound and video over the other or anything superior?

Thanks again team

I have a bias for discs pressed by Kuraray so I'd keep the US release. Japanese release has a better cover though.

I would open that US release and check to see if it has rot.

Even if it's totally ok I would prefer to keep the Japanese release myself, given a choice.

So to answer my own question.
I watched disc 1 USA and disc 2 Jap.

If i had to make a comment i would say the Jap copy does look slighty better when using the D-EXT setting on my player,
Sound much the same, maybe the USA copy had a small advantage but could just be the beer.
Either way both are great discs and the audio rock, subwoofer was slowing destroying a nearby bookcase.

Decieded to be selfish and keep both :)

The D-EXT feature crushes blacks, atleast it does on my x9. You'd be better off adjusting the black level on the tv for a better picture.

I used the US copy to test my AC3 demod/decoder that I picked up earlier in the week. I was wholly impressed by the AC3 track... it definitely holds up against more modern encodings/formats.

This film holds a special place for me... it was the first film I ever saw multiple times in theaters, including early release day, and I've owned it on pretty much every format now (VHS, 5-Star DVD, Blu-Ray, now LD... Haven't ponied up for UHD yet, probably wait for a deal). The only film(s) that match it for number of formats I've purchased is the Star Wars OT, and I haven't purchased that on UHD yet either (mostly thanks to Disney+).

Is there any compelling reason to seek out the 1998 ID4 Special Edition LD? I'm not really a special-features person and I'm pretty sure they've all been released elsewhere anyway... so I'm not sure it's worth the price it's demanding.

I guess I should have asked this question about LD in general before going down the rabbit hole, but instead I'll ask it specific to the ID4 SE LD... why?

I'm much more of a dabbler than a collector. If it's just for the packaging, I'll pass (the Star Wars Faces LDs are taking up the only 3 spots I've reserved for "display" in my media cabinet). If it's just for the special features, I'll pass (it seems they're all available on BD that I already own, I've already seen them, and I rarely if ever re-watch special features). Is there something I'm missing in terms of the transfer, soundtrack, etc that isn't available elsewhere? I'm having trouble justifying LD purchases in general with most being cheap lots or local pickups... re-buying an LD that I already have (along with DVD and BD) seems even harder to justify.
