Hello!

Maybe a bit of LaserDisc trivia but I always thought that CD Video (some audio + 1 video track) was more driven by Phillips/Pioneer and VSD (only video) by SONY and I always assumed that they didn't overlap.

We of course have multiple examples of CD Videos release in PAL Europe, NTSC USA and NTSC Japan:

Bananarama: Venus (1986) [080 026-2]
Bananarama: Venus (1986) [080 027-2]
Bananarama: Venus (1986) [W18X-23001]

Bon Jovi: Livin' On a Prayer (1988) [080 042-2]
Bon Jovi: Livin' On a Prayer (1988) [870 701-2]
Bon Jovi: Livin' On a Prayer [24VP-2]

Cinderella: Nobody's Fool (1986) [080 047-2]
Cinderella: Nobody's Fool (1988) [870 704-2]
Cinderella: Nobody's Fool [24VP-3]

Etc.

But in found one counter-example today where the same title got both formats with:

The Square: Truth (1987) [24VH 2004] CD Video
The Square: Truth (1987) [CSFM 7024] VSD

Is it the only oddity?

Do we know for sure that both versions exist?

If they do and were released in the same year then that is weird since any machine that can play one can play both. Maybe one had significantly different packaging?

Publishing and performance rights in Japan can sometimes be very hard to work with. There also may have been some weird problem there that came up/went away, and required a newer version.

EDIT: I just noticed none of the CDDA tracks are the title track. That’s weird, isn’t it?

It's actually pretty smart. Why waste space putting the same track in audio format.
I'd much rather have another B-side or different album track than the same track repeated again.
Quite a few Japanese CDVs opted to have unique audio tracks on them:
Here's another example:
Show-Ya: Kodoku no LABYRINTH [CTV24-105]

The only problem with that is when you go to play it in your car you have a maxi single without the title track. The point of the format was that it would be useful in regular CD players as well.

Ahhh, the CDV is the general release and the VSD is for the F1 show that uses that song as it’s theme. Totally different releases, really. Is the video content even the same?

Don't own any... and can't play Video CD or VSD anyway with LD-S9 or HLD-X9.

This is the reason to own a CDV-only player! I now have four, only one of which will even pretend to play a disc, alas.

I was going to say the same. :D
I'd go for the Pioneer PD 707V. That one has a clamper on the cd transport and is dead silent.
Luckily most of my players still work except for Yamaha M777.
You can find the Pioneer every now and then on Buyee.

As much as I love collecting old audio/video gears, the number of Video CD/VSD I own could not warrant such a purchase :-P

C+C Music Factory: Gonna Make You Sweat (1991) [SRFM 7714]
X Japan: Celebration (1990) [CSFM-7009]

I sold Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Teaser & Trailer (1991) [LPR-036] previously. Could never watch it :(

That's what I found odd about the "Compact Laserdisc" experiment that Pioneer put out in the 80s. Gives you a few music videos, then some audio tracks with a still image for video on a 12" disc.

I only have this one: Dream Academy,The (1986) [CLD-86-003]

Then there was overlap with the videos and audio only tracks. I guess it would make sense, if they merely used the same audio from whatever tape master they used in for the video portion. Then used the same redbook audio from the CD release on the audio only tracks.

I wish those had caught on as it seemed a perfect format for releasing music albums + videos.
Sleeve art identical size to an LP.
The full album available identical to an LP, plus the added bonus of the music videos to watch.
They could have made them double sided to accomodate virtually any length of album and/or extra videos where some albums had more singles etc.

It actually would have rendered 5" and 8" LDs obsolete if it had taken off and also killed VHS music video tapes and LPs!

That wouldn't have been bad having that hold large albums and bonus content. I would have defiantly would have bought them. I think the only one I have is A-ha (had to buy it twice since the first one was cracked and found one local which was pristine-hanging one of the covers as Album art)

I have all of the "Compact LaserDisc" titles except "Colonel Abrams." "Cocker" was a bit of a departure from the formula as it contains all 10 tracks from the CD but 3 of them are videos only (no audio only variant).

Colonel Abrams is definitely the toughest to locate. Perhaps it didn't sell as well when first released.

I wonder was Cocker missing audio only tracks due to the 3 video tracks taking up more space on the disc?
Still they could have used the other side if that was an concern.
It's definitely a problem they could have overcome for most albums - even one with half a dozen videos released.
