Hi guys,

Been running into an issue with the CAV discs. For some reason on my player when I reach the end of a side on a CAV disc towards the last 3-4 minutes. Playback starts to distort to the point where the player stops playing the disc. It does not happen on every disc of the sets, but have issues on Criterion The Killer and Hard Boiled. I have a CLD-201. (Yes I know they are apparently garbage). Is this a player issue, and am I going to have to buy a new player? Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

you know it may have a slight warp, I'll have to look at it when I get home from work. BUT that brings up a good point, since not every single disc does it. I notice it most on the first disc of The Killer Criterion and Hard Boiled. One of them I believe won't even read like the the last track or two. Which is odd cause some will completely play out without a hitch (mainly my CLV discs) but I guess as I run a few more discs through I will know for sure.

Sound familiar? Check out the 3rd post down (very reputable source).

BTW, Google has the old newsgroups archived as "Google Groups." They're useful to search for LD questions as they are a good cache of information from when laserdisc was current technology. (More users = more questions = more answers).

Thanks! That is exactly right what I needed to know. I may scoop up a CLD-2090 and hold onto my 201 as an interim player till it ships.

the CLD-D503 is a really nice player, no trick play on CLV discs but well worth it, it will even play both sides.
can get cheap on ebay.

I also have but haven't done any quality image testing with it, a 2 sided CLD-2080
from what I've read its like the 3080 or very close to the 3070 again without trick play on CLV discs.

both should be had for under 80 bucks with shipping if you find them on ebay, well worth it.
also even the CLD-3030, single sided version of the 3070 player. one just sold on ebay for 13 bucks  with 35 shipping.

don't know about the 2090 but working i'm sure its fine

Yea I'll look into those models for sure. I'm pretty new to the LD world, so I am picking up as I go. Got dealt a bad hand with this player, but the CLD-2090 is going so far for only $19 plus shipping so I am going to hawk it and see if I luck out. Ill look into the other players in the meantime as well.

Thanks!!

I'll bet it's the discs are warped. I had the same problem with my copy of Star Trek Generations on the CAV side. I was able to pick up another copy of it locally which plays perfectly to the end. My original copy was ever so slightly warped but the new copy is flat.

Maybe it really is warped. I haven't gotten another CAV yet. But literally everything else I play on there plays without a hitch.

I feel the same way about this. Warped disc, maybe.

mechagregor,

Lay the discs out flat on flat surface with few books laying on them for a week and try the disc again.

Or best with few small sheets of small glass with the laserdisc in-between and the books on top.

I had odd warped ALIEN laserdisc CLV THX AC-3 pressing that wouldn't make it though the last 5 mins of the dinner scene and just jumped and froze and then player stopped. Had to use the Auto A-B to switch the laser over to side B.

I put the disc away feeling bit disappointed that I might have to buy it again. A few weeks or so later I played it again and it made it though the dinner ALIEN chest buster scene. But now it won't make it past Kane, being shot out into space and did the same freeze and jumping.

Put away for maybe month and played it again and it made it all the way to end of the disc.

So must been some usual warp at the end of the disc on side A, yet side B had no snags playing all the way to the end. odd?

So try the flat surface and few books see if that fixes it?

Do you keep all your laserdiscs stacked vertically on shelf?
