Some times no color from LD on start of LD or will go to black & white while playing, or vise versa but DVD 's color OK all the time (not that I watch DVD's on the 919 Have Sony NS-1000 for DVD), another question have another DVL-919 that doesn't play who repairs in Los Angeles, CA area or any where? 2nd machine I let sit now doesn't play, tray opens/closes OK however!

Does this happen on both Composite & S-Video, or only one or the other?

I'm in PAL land and sometimes get black and white from NTSC discs when I connect my DVL 919E to the TV via s-video. Which connections and disc types are you using? Could it be something similar? Also does the US version of the 919 have the PAL/NTSC switch on the back? It could be set wrong.

No, the US dvl is only for ntsc. but it sounds like your tv doesn't support ntsc :/ (or you could be using the wrong channel on your TV, usually one of the AV Channels are sharing a channel for both composite and svideo, so try all your channels, if you still only get black and white, it's probably your tv not supporting ntsc.

Is there even any LD-player from the Us that supports PAL?

No, no LD player actually made for US market with PAL included. All Pal players or combos in the US now came from elsewhere. I suppose one could have been special ordered.

I have seen folks using a DVL 909 or 919 that had one of the component outputs plugged into the composite TV input and hence only got B&W, in particular, from the luminence signal.

You could also get B&W if you have both composite and s-video plugged into the same set of input jacks. Most TVs don't allow both, it's one or the other.

alright i'm going to try one also.
i don't have this player at all. BUT
i know when i have my TV hooked up with my DVD player in component and don't have it on Video 2-C i will get the correct image
if i have it on Video 2 it will be black and white.

so is it possible that you have it on the wrong setting on your TV or receiver?

Thanks all! Found the S Video cable was bad at connector (Monster Cable) shaked and twisted slightly than color would come and go. Replaced cable now OK with slight twisting/shaking just in case player connection was no good.
