Lets try wikipedia: Quote: LaserDiscs are read optically with a laser beam, whereas CED discs are read physically with a stylus (similar to a conventional gramophone record). The two systems are mutually incompatible.

It could have been a FB group though I know I read it somewhere.. Yes, actually I think you are correct. If I remember I think I made them post a picture as they were having trouble playing the disc

The silicone "grease" is actually a sillicone oil that is sprayed on the disc during its manufacture. Its purpose is to act as a lubricant for the stylus. Without the oil, the diamond on the stylus would wear out in a hurry and the disc could suffer irreparable damage. Even fingerprints are a no-no on a CED. You have to remember that the grooves on a CED are very small. 40 grooves on a CED can fit in a single groove of a 33 1/3 LP record.

Theoretically a laser could be utilized to read the grooves on a CED, right? Maybe someone with way too much time on their hands and access to all the spare needed could make a crazy-assed player that can play both LD and CED
