I recently won a CLD-R7G off if Yahoo Japan for about $190 (pretty cheap imo). I know it's one of the better models, but how good is the picture quality exactly?

I would like something that at least rivals the CLD-D704.. I don't really wanna spend the high price of the X0 or X9 so I'm crossing my fingers that this is good enough for now as my previous player had really had DNR that couldn't be turned off :(

It’s like one step better than a 704, so basically unless you’re an LD maniac you won’t even be able to tell the difference. That goes for the R7G and pretty much anything above it in picture quality.

These days your display has way more to do with LD picture quality than the difference between two similar players.

Since you can't use the S-video anymore you may not care for the image.
All depends on what you use as your monitor.

Real reason I had to sell my R7G was that I needed the money at the time for a flight etc.
But after technology changed I'm OK without having one, when I did it was the best player under a grand at the time.

Yeah, I didn’t think about that. My 99 has significantly better color from its s-video port. However all the new displays (good ones anyway) manage to do at least as good of a job boosting the color.

Would any of you guys be able to point me in the direction of a stepdown converter to get for this? Don't know much about them nor know if any brands are better than the other, etc
