I just recently obtained a Pioneer LD-V4200 that needs either a belt replaced or the tray gear train lubricated...but I don't really know how to get inside the thing and I don't want to make a mess trying to find out.

I can't seem to find a manual or any information about this player, only similar players from around the same time with similar model numbers. Does anyone know where I could find stuff like a service manual or at the very least some diagrams from one? I don't even know what kind of belt I'd need.

What is the symptom of the problem you are having with the player?

The loading tray doesn't come out on its own. I suspect the belt for the tray has snapped/disintegrated but I can't be sure until I get inside.

You need a screw driver to take the top off and see what you can see first.

I had written something a few hours ago and just realized it was probably not quite correct...

Can you clarify that this player has a tray that comes out partially and then you have to grab it to pull it out the rest of the way? If so, that is probably normal for this player as it appears to be one of the models that Pioneer made w/ a semi-automatic loading design. In addition, when you load a disc, you will have to push the tray in until about 1/4 or less of the tray is showing and then the load mechanism pulls it in the rest of the way.

So the next question; have you tried to play a disc in it yet?

Sorry for the wait, I have an update. So here is what the player does when you turn it on, it partially ejects the tray and then I can pull it out the rest of the way:

Image

I put a disc in and it plays the disc just fine (which surprised me, given the disk is 4 years newer and this is such a basic player) but now that there's a disc in there, I can't get it out without disassembling the unit. I don't even hear anything happen when I press the Reject button.

EDIT: Now I can't get it to play the disc either, the Park light comes on, then goes out, and no amount of hitting the play button will start the disc playing.

Perhaps the issue is related to the fact that this is an RS232C controlled player???

Can you check the dip switches behind the "function" door on the front and see what they are set to?

Also, I assume the eject (reject) button works when there is no disc in the player (I assume that would be the case since you said you were able to load a disc)?

Good point, the LD-V8000 does have settings where it is controlled by the serial interface only. The operators manual for the 4200 should let you know if you have that option and how to set it.

I haven't been able to find a manual though, there isn't one uploaded to the manual database attached to this website and searching on Google only seems to find me manuals for units like the LD-V3000 and LD-V4400.

If that's what it is, the dip switches should pretty much be the same on all players.
You aren't going to break anything with the wrong dip settings, it just won't work.

They were the same in most arcade boards with the same companies.

I'd say try the most logical approach for now; all dip switches up or all of them down and see what happens. :) Definitely can't hurt @ this point.

I flipped all the DIP switches to down and got this strange screen of nonsense:

Image

But what was strange is that I flipped all the switches back to up, tried the player again, and it was suddenly fine! It played the movie, it ejected the movie, it automatically popped the tray out and pulled the tray in like it's supposed to, and it just seems to be fixed with no actual work on my part!

That's a nice debug mode. I wish all players had that.

That is your service screen, one of the dips will get you in to service.

Function switch
1 - Side Repeat
2 - Load start
3 - Power on start
4 - Spare be sure it is up
5 - Back color
6 - TxD termination
7 - Baud rate
8 - Test mode

If you have the remote RU-V101 for this or another remote with a function key

Press 0 then Func then Video to turn video off
Press 1 then Func them Video to turn video on

As long as the Key Lock lite is out the front panel buttons should work. Try inserting a mini-plug into the EXT CONT jack in front and removing it a few times with power off and then power it on and try again.

I had a very similar issue with the CLD-V5000. In my case, it was SW7 that caused the problem. "Sequential Playback" requires a computer command over the RS232 port to start playback. The play button doesn't do anything in this state. Knowing this ahead of time would have saved literally hours spent disassembling the player, swapping out the spindle motor, etc. When in doubt, set the switches to default!
