I picked up a Tandy Realistic MD-1000 multi-disk/laserdisc player yesterday. it plays fine but it does not fully engage the head upward when loading laserdiscs. CDs load fine, but they're much lighter. in my other players (pioneer) the tray load belt also engages the head mechanism, and i think this radio shack/funai works that way as well. a little help in lifting the head mech, and the player works fine.

the belt seems a little loose. I have an assortment of replacement belts, but when I went to replace it, the belt is trapped in the gear box. the gear mech unscrews from the loading tray section, but the spindles/gears are permenently attached to the gear box mech, and there is no clearance to pull the old belt out/insert new belt. no screws to remove the drive gear or spindle.

any advice on how to approach this? thanks.

This looks like it would be something like an older Pioneer CLD-1070. I do not have any service manuals to help with Realistic players

This might shed some light on how this player’s gear assembly looks....

http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/tandy/tandy_md-1000/tandy_md-1000.htm

Based on what I see, the belt is not in a sealed box but in between a bracket that appears to be accessible from the bottom of the player. I think the chassis looks like it could be based on a Sony, MDP-455.

Belt is really, really, really awful to get to. You have to pull up the entire top assembly, disconnect cables (including the pickup's ribbon cable), flip the entire top assembly over, unscrew the metal piece that holds the loading motor assembly, pop off a tension ring and remove a gear.

This player is not as cheap as I thought it would be. Nichicon MUSE caps on the inside. Was trying to find a Philips player this was based on and could not.

Unit has glue on the boards that has become conductive. It needs to be chipped off. KHS-130A PU.

Will post some photos later and maybe someone can identify it.

I know this is an OLD topic and got resurrected but would be nice to see pics.

I remember when I first saw LD players at the good ole Shack, thought LD was now going to be everywhere as a kid, boy was I wrong.

Yeah topic is old, but since it isn't solved I thought it would be good to keep things centralized.

Unit was seized up due to old grease. After that the spindle grip needed some Shoe Goo. Loading belt was complete bad, so I finally got to it. It is rather large for a LD player. I did not have a replacement, so I scrubbed it and cleaned the path, but I will need to get back down to it and measure it (I should have the first time :()

Some sort of noise going on in the video. Going to continue chipping away at the rest of the glue and after that look at the huge power caps.

I wanted to revive this topic for a couple reasons
1 - I just bought an MD-1000 and was going to look into modding it for AC-3, but there are no service manuals anywhere I can find. So, the next logical step is to buy one and open it up :)

2 - I wanted to post additional pictures of the insides for everyone else's sake who comes across this thread.

Bonus post reason - When I put a disc in, the laser moves in to read the disc (CD and LD), but the spindle motor never spins the disc up during read operation. I think I have a dead spindle motor in this thing because if I unplug the spindle motor power, the behavior is exactly the same.

My 2 cents, this thing is either a clone of a Pioneer CLD-1070 or CLD-1080.

Photos enclosed below with a possible RF tap point.

That is probably full RF.

Likely another dead Sony KHS-130A rather than the spindle.

I'm still not sure who made it but it was not Pioneer. It has a Sony pickup. Interesting to see 5 Yamaha ICs.

Thanks cplusplus! That was a lot of helpful info.

Is it worth it to replace sony laser pickups? I don't really want to invest any more time in this unit. It looks like it will be sold for parts with a working remote.

It is, but the cost of replacing the KHS-130A in this model likely exceeds the value of it working.

Could you post photos of the other sides of the boards? I'm wondering if there is anything labeled on the other side that could help identify tap points.
