Hep!

So, I always use a stereo amplifier and have always been quite happy about the digital tracks on laserdiscs, cause in all my time of LD collecting, i have only been concerned about picture quality. Now, i was wondering if anyone know what i would need to down mix AC3 (and/or) DTS to analogue stereo, and if i would gain any sound quality by doing it.

let the discussion begin! =)

i don't know much about it BUT, the DTS would be on the toslink optical and you can't turn that into analog.
or i wasn't able to on my receiver that had analog and digital, if i wanted to hear digitial i had to select
digital, if i wanted analog i had to select analog.

you can't get one from the other.

I think there are some receivers that would accept a DTS/AC3 signal and downmix them through the headphone jack. Dunno about the quality though as I would never try to do something like that.

A lot of receivers will have 5.1/6.1 analog output that you can use after the signal from your source (LD or DVD or Blu-ray) but if you only use the L an R front, that's all you'd be getting (while sacrificing all the other channels.)

Interestingly DVL-919 has a digital coax output labeled "pcm only". That one outputs ac-3 downmixed to pcm 2ch according to the manual. I assume this is only for the ac-3 on DVD.

The Millennium 2.4.6 DTS decoder can selectively down-mix, LFE to Main, Center to Main and Surrounds to Main. As others have said above, I've no idea if it would sound any better than the 2.0 PCM track.
