I've always been annoyed that I saved up for months to get my home cinema setup, a budget package sold by UK vendor Richer Sounds, and finally got the money together TWO DAYS after they sold the last of their amps with AC-3 RF input. I ended up with an amp that's better in other respects, but it would have been nice to have that built in.

So which is a basic package that gives you AC-3 RF to SPDIF (preferably optical) or 5-channel component, won't cost an arm and a leg, and runs on 240v?

I went to Richer Sounds to ask about such amps in about 2006 and they just laughed. It was like the Not the Nine O'clock News "Gramophone" sketch: "You want AC3-RF input, GRANDDAD?! What are you using - a LASERDISC player!? Ho ho ho." Never shopped there again since.

Standalone AC3-rf to SPDIF demodulators (yes, 240V versions) do crop up on the bay from time to time, as do amps with that facility built in, so all is not lost. The list at the top of this thread is invaluable.

If you read the replies the last reciever with rf in was pioneer sc-09 (lx-90 susano) back in 2008 and retailed $7000. Theta casablanca 3 is the only current preamp that has rf in and it starts at $15000.
The last reasonaly priced reciever was sold in 2002-2003. All mamufacturers dropped it after.
Your best option is rf demodulator or older reciever or older ac-3 decoder. They circulate on ebay for $50-200.

I've been looking at ebay UK, so far without much luck. But the list should help stop me bidding on something that doesn't work.

Re the earlier message and Richer Sounds, I think I got my setup around 2003 - as I said, they'd just stopped stocking receivers with RF decoders. But the receiver I got instead was a very nice Sony and still works perfectly in other respects, don't want to replace the whole thing.

From time to time, I see the NAD T770 with the AC3RF input for about $200. It also has a tape monitor, for three head decks. But, be careful before you buy one, as NAD made some with the AC3RF, and some not. Good idea to check with the seller.

Hopefully I've got lucky - made an offer on an Onkyo ED-901 and bought it fairly cheaply, should be delivered some time in the next few days. Incidentally, the manual is on line here:

Have always asked myself why Pioneer never build the RF demodulator in their players and routing the signal through the regular digital output instead like their RFD-1 does.

I'm thinking it would add a $100-200 to already high price of the players at the time.

Why not make it available as an external add-on for $80 instead?

Hello,

and a big THANK YOU to tkmedia for this precious list ... and to all the other supporters

I think i found a few mistakes & missing in/out's

1)
AFAIK the following Pioneer models are all the same base design and do have the same in/outputs
VSX-909RDS
VSA-E08
VSA-D08EX
VSX-37TX
VSX-39TX
and their i/o's are listed as (2c, 3o, 2o out, 5.1in) ... but it is (2c, 3o, 2o out, 7.1in, 7.1pre-out) with only 5.0 speaker-connectors

2)
AFAIK there was no Pioneer Elite SP-D07 processor.
It seems like the SP-D07 was sold in three colors...(using the image-button@google)
...in black with a standard front panel
...in champagne/golden with added mini side bars like the LD-S9/DVL-9
...in silver with added mini side bars
but not with ELITE logo.
It's more like the SP-99D was the ELITE-ized SP-D07

3)
The SONY SDP-E800 has one LineIn L/R

That's all folks

Greetings from Germany

That might take me a while to verify! The list was mostly made while I was researching and 'shopping'. I would not really rely on the i/o 100% I've seen various versions of product and regions with different i/o, plus that list is almost 10 years old. The i/o was also added much later. I'll just be lazy and add a disclaimer in the mean time. :lolno:

This receiver was posted today on Laserdisc forever, it looks like it has a built in demodulator and should be added to the list.

Found an ax10 in a second hand shop today for £150
Considering the quality of that receiver, and the fact it has the RF demodulator (for the price of a second hand demodulator)
Is it worth buying and using as a very big demodulator??

To answer myself here, I can say for certain that the Pioneer VSX-07TX and VSX-09TX have phono level inputs.

My VSA-D8EX and its big brother the VSA-D10EX have both AC3RF and PHONO circuitry making them a good companion for old A/V technologies. Unless I am forced to upgrade to HDMI, I haven't found a good reason to upgrade it yet.

Looks like Theta Casa Nova also had the same digital input board as the Casablanca. It has 2 RF inputs, 6 coax , 2 optical, 110 ohm XLR balanced, 6 pair of analog inputs, 2 coax out. It is a nice pre-pro. They usually go for $250ish on ebay.

It would make a great hub for 2 LD players and some other.

I believe the back on this amp is the same as my VSX-606s, I was lucky to find one of these with the remote and original box.
if you don't mind having an older amp I think this about the cheapest way to get an AC-3 setup, at least it was in my case
