Post subject:  What exactly is AC3 on LD ?

I am searching for the exact meaning of AC3 on LD.
Is that 5.1 ?
My actual hi-fi/DAC is stereo, then should I use AC3 out (with demodulator) or stay with the digital/analog out of my player ?

It's 5.1 (or at least usually) - it's a ~384Kb or so stream encoded into the space used for one of the analog audio channels on other disks.

If you're only using 2 channels, the regular digital audio is generally better, it's literally CD audio.

thank you !
Then, someday, if i want 5.1,
I should buy : RF demodulator -> DAC 5.1 ? -> Amp 5.1 ? -> 3 more speakers ?

It depends on which type of device you are using.

Check this post first: Receivers and other equipments that support AC-3RF

If you go for a stand-alone demodulator, you will input the AC3RF (analog) and get the AC3 (digital) out that you can feed to your A/V Amp for processing.
If you go for a processor, you will input the AC3RF (analog) and get 6 un-amplified channels out (5.1) to feed the 5.1 inputs of your A/V Amp for processing.

Some manuals can be found here.

Edit : Une piste DTS fonctionne de la meme facon et avec les memes equipement que le AC3 ?
Other question. How can you maintain Lip sync with AC3 out for sound and deinterlacer for video ?

With DTS, you send the optical output of your LD player into your AVR and the AVR converts the DTS to 5.1 sound (if it can decode the DTS). You would not need a demodulator for DTS. My new Sony Bravia HDTV has a function in its menu system for the lip synch problem you mention. Check your HDTV to see if it could solve your problem.

I have a HK demod with preamp and it has a hidden pot for increasing delay. It's not a huge delay though and not enough to make up slow processors and TVs. Failing that your receiver can add delay but many new receivers lack this on the analog stage. Beyond that...you'll have to buy something, I guess.

Abt chip in the EDGE has about two frame delay on film and video deinterlacing. It's less than two frames in game mode. If you connect the demodulator output to EDGE and use the optical output on the EDGE to your AVR then it will compensate for the delay. If your AVR takes HDMI the EDGE will transcode to HDMI.
