Sorry it may seem this project has been abandoned but it is not. I will resume as soon as time permits. I have all the necessary hardware needed. I also acquired several more titles. Now the collection includes below;

Sony:

- Close Encounters
- Lawrence of Arabia
- Bugsy
- A League of their own
- Legends of the fall

Panasonic:

-E.T.
-Jurassic Park

Pioneer:

- Terminator 2
- Basic Instinct
- Atlantis
- Universal Soldier
- Cliffhanger
- Stargate
- Dances with Wolves

I don't think I will be buying more MUSE/Hi-Vision titles for a long while. There is only few left that interest me.
I am hoping to start with experimenting this Monday.

Hey substance, were you able to capture any samples? Sad to see this thread drift off into nothingness after all the discussion.

Ok I decided to resurrect this thread. I have updated the titles in hand. I have updated the equipment list. I am shooting for mid to late December to work on captures as I will have some extra time around that time.

I have a couple of issues.

1- Muse/Hi-vision discs are encoded at 1080i@60.00 instead of 1080i@59.94. 60.00 frame rate is not within mpeg specifications. It also is not within Blu-ray specifications. I will have to encode into a different codec. Even then I won't be able to burn onto a Blu-ray as Video disc as 60.00hz is not allowed. I want to stay true to the source and capture at 1080i60.00Hz. If I conver to 59.94, some 200 frames will be missing on a 2 hour film. Since it will be dropping frames it might even alter the look. I will have to work with a different codec which accepts 1080i60. It will have to allow real high bitrates and able to conserv grain structure. MUSE has a very distinc grain/noise.

possible solution: use 64gb SD card or flash drive instead of blu-ray discs. use a common codec that allows 60.00Hz and can be played on most blu-ray/media players. I am open to suggestions on this. 64GB SD/flash drives are $20-30 range nowadays btw.

2- my mac book pro has only 256gb ssd space. I am planning to capture at 10bit lossless. I am not sure if I can capture 1hour (1 CLV side) within this hdd space. I can add usb 3.0 external hdd but I am not sure if it will be fast enough to cope up.

I decided to NOT process video. I want to capture as true to the source as possible and copy onto media. Only processing I am interested is adding audio. I am hoping to capture 4ch, 2ch muse(dance) and 2ch pcm tracks. Discs that are 4ch muse have 2ch pcm as well. Discs with 2ch muse have no pcm tracks.

For those interested in multiple captures. I can probably copy them all onto an external hdd. I am assuming each title will be around 35-60GB. A 1TB drive should be able to hold all 15 titles I have.

I am planning to acquire at least 4 more title, Back to the Future Trilogy, and Breakfast at Tiffany's but I dont think I will find these any time soon.

From what I can tell, 60.00i is supported in ATSC (which is MPEG-2), just not Blu-Ray. I think you can use any codec with 60.0i - but what your tools actually allow, and what a set-top player actually plays, varies...

The Muse movie discs originate from film source - that is 24full frames "telecined" to 60i. Therefore you want to capture the 1920x1080/60i Muse LD and then do the inverse telecine to get back to 24fps. For the scenery discs things might be different, as they are *probably* recorded with HDV cameras in "real" 60i (I don't know for sure, but you will see it when analyzing the capture frame by frame).

I don't see too much value in capturing the interlaced source material with a consumer device that immediately encodes into any compressed signal before you had the chance to properly reverse telecine or post process it before compressing for BD. To prevent any artefacts introduced by video codecs you need to use a device which captures your source loss-free. But lossless captures require are lot of space. You will end up with up to 120MB per second for the captured raw material (450GB per hour). Same applies for audio. You want to capture up to 4 channels lossless and then transform them into 5.1ch surround sound.

We've gone though the same kind of issues when trying to capture Arcade LDs back in the days (although the amount of data was lower and could be handled somehow). I started with consumer solutions and ended up buying a Silicon Graphics 320, one of the few consumer devices that was able to capture the frames lossless - at that time.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to stop your enthusiasm for the topic. But I fear that the results - if not done with highest possible effort - could disappoint if compared with actual/professional BD releases.

EDIT: out of curiosity I took the "bible" from my bookshelf ("Hi-Vision Television" from NHK Research Labs) and the whole process is much more complicated than stated above. You might want to track down the book before deciding how to move forward.

it looks like I only have enough time to do captures from my muse titles. I don't have any extra time for the learning curve for processing the raw data.

Can someone help me out here? You can tell me what software(Mac preferred) I need and what I should apply. I just want to color correct and compress to mpeg-4 or equivalent for blu-ray.

Whoever contributes will get blu-ray copies for free, just pay actual shipping. Thanks

My 2 cents: you should capture using a lossless codec (I use lagarith, but it works only on Windows; there are many others, though) to compress the files up to about 3:1 without losing any bit; then, you have to do an inverse telecine, and change the FPS to 23.976 progressive - you'll not lose any frame, but audio should be converted to be in sync with video; at the end, you will convert the result file to be BD compliant - the best choice is of course AVC.

If you need further help let me know!

Just inverse telecine from 1080i60.00 to 1080p24.00. This is one of the frame rates allowed by Blu-ray. Then sound doesn't need to be slowed down. There are lots of European BDs that are 24.00 fps instead of 23.976.

You can capture to a USB 3.0 drive if you use 8-bit lossless, but I think the data rate for 10-bit lossless is too high. It may make sense to compromise in this area, since the final Blu-ray output is only 8-bit anyway. Especially if you aren't going to radically color-correct the film (and why would you?).

I recently found back to the future trilogy and several other titles. my collection is now 31 titles updated on the original post. I still don't have Dracula but hoping to find it soon. Thanks for the offer. I am still learning about the capturing process. I don't want to re-capture every time I learn a new trick which will improve things. I want to start the project when I have at least %80 knowledge of these things. Hardware part is easy but software is complicated. Capturing is not a imminent interest to me so the learning occurs at a very slow speed, sorry for that.

I want to ask a few questions. Maybe someone can help me here.

Is it better to capture raw 10 bit 4:4:4, edit and convert to h.264 (or similar)?

or

Is it better to capture (or use hardware encoder), encode to h.264 (or similar) then edit?

Editing:
-Cut, merge(disc sides)
-Color correct
-de-interlace, scale, crop

Any software recommendations for above editing? It can be paid software, it doesn't have to be free or cheap.

I prefer to use Sony Movie Studio Platinum. It has 90% of all the features of Sony Vegas Pro yet license price is vastly lower.

If you can capture in uncompressed RGB that'd probably be better, since that gives you more quality control without having to redo the captures later.

how many jigs do you think 1 hour NTSC video would take in Uncompressed 4:4:4 in quicktime (using Mac)?
