Bose is pretty great at making completely packed things. Their Triport earbuds were very comfortable and sounded...pretty good. A lot of people like their noise canceling headphones. They are pretty nice...if you actually like noise canceling headphones, which personally I absolutely do not. The little radios they made for the kitchen and whatever are cool.
Where Bose kind of sucks is in their loudspeakers. They have the impedance of a cinder block, it seems like, and similar acoustic properties.
As for JBL, if I saw some floor standing speakers that cost $500 a piece or whatever, something in competition with other stuff I'd actually take seriously, I would certainly give them a listen. It's the $99 all-in-one bundles and bass cannons that I'm most familiar with.

So, I was correct, then. I've never seen or dealt with the low end of JBL consumer products, but I'm sure they're out there & probably suck wind. I've worked at a number of JBL dealers for the last 25+ years, both pro & consumer series, and generally only dealt with the high end or vintage JBLs. For live PA/DJ work I've seen some of their cheezier series, though. At least 10 of the JBLs I currently use here are ~100 lbs. each, and another 10 or 12 weigh in at around the 50-60 lb. mark. And, I've sold off my larger speakers (EAW cabinets with JBL drivers). Back on topic, a little- older AVRs with AC3 inputs + 5.1 analog outs can be used as surround decoders for newer AVRs that have 5.1 analog inputs, if you set it up correctly. Newer AVRs could probably be used to feed into older AVR's 5.1 inputs if the older power amps are worth the trouble. Probably tough to work out smooth remote control of a setup like that, but it could be possible. je
