i've got that lone JD-M108, -that i had found NOS some years back- pretty much just for the sake of owning it. i do not, in fact, own even one 8cm. CD to load into it, i have yet to see one in the flesh, even. my PD-M90X was designed and produced right before the era of CD SINGLE, -such as that "Era" ever actually was- and as such, the JD-M108 magazine will not lock into loaded position in that model. i do, however, also own the first TOTL magazine CDP PIONEER ever made with 8cm. in mind, 1988's PD-M700, which of course, WILL accept the 8cm. magazine, as it was designed to. again, unfortunately, i lack even one 8cm. disc, so i've precisely zero experience with the sub-format...

PD-M40 was PIONEER's entry-level 6-disc CD changer model for 1987. that was the first year PIONEER introduced their "HONEYCOMB CHASSIS" methodology for pressing their sheet metal chassis panels. PIONEER claimed it was an anti-resonant, rigidity-enhancing feature, but in my experience, it leaves the impression of a lighter, thinner grade of sheet metal being used, with the honeycomb pressing lending the lighter body an acceptable degree of rigidity.
the 1986 PD-M6, PIONEER's very first CD changer model, lacks any implementation of the Honeycomb Chassis design, and yet it somehow actually feels heavier and more rigid/solid than the 1987 ELITE PD-M90X, the first PIONEER CD changer to employ the Honeycomb Chassis design, and, AFAIK, PIONEER's first ever product incorporating it.
finally, BTW, the PD-M90X, as well as the PD-M70 and -M60, all use the same reliable and beautifully built 1st-gen changer mechanism/laser pick-up that the PD-M6 employs.
1987's PD-M40/PD-M50 were the first models to employ the lighter built, but still well-made 2nd-gen mechanism, and the infamous laser pickup whose lens adhesive so often fails, resulting in a dead but easily reparable player with a lens rattling around inside...

Also fired it up and everything is blinking all at one on the display so I guess it might be broke? Same magazines as all of the other PD-Ms I owned. The 6 is also by FAR the worst-sounding CD player I've ever owned, so in my opinion you're not missing much. je

OK, i've had that issue before, it is easily fixable. there are a pair of black ribbon leads from the PCB CONTROL mounted on the front bezel, leading to the PCB MAIN mounted on the main chassis; those leads terminate in grey connection terminals on the PCB MAIN side. if one has come unseated, bare pins can cross, resulting in malfunction such as that you seem to be experiencing. you can reach in there, grasp both ends of the connector, gently but firmly pull up/out, and they will release. pull the cables out, make certain all bare pins are straight as possible, and carefully reinsert them. see if the player operates properly, if so, everything is properly set, and you can press those grey connectors closed once more...

Awesome!! all the same, i strongly recommend that you obtain at least one copy each of JD-M6 and JD-M100. their fit, finish and clarity of front panel labeling are vastly superior to the JD-M200 and later variants. they are both very nice indeed. JD-M6 is the mid-80's original design, and my personal favorite. it has a very attractive anodized brushed aluminum decorative plate up front, with a very sexy mirror finish beveled edge that shines in certain angles and lighting, and a very cool looking disc window on top; finally, -lest i forget- the JD-M108 8cm. six-disc cart; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pioneer-JD-M108 ... 3aa849557c
