I am a newbie to LD but so far love everything about them.

My cld406 has a AC3 output.

I have been looking for an amp and recently looking at a marantz AV550 which has a labeled AC3 port. But just today a friend offered me a pioneer elite VSX-52TX which is a more complete system that has a connection for dvd\LD which looks the same as the ac3 on my LD player.

Will this work? What kind of cable would I need? Digital, coax?

I am a little confused now with all these connection types. Also because the av port is labeled Dvd/LD

Help appreciated!

As AC3 is stored as RF on Laserdisc, it has to be demodulated in order to work. It looks like the Marantz AV550 has it so you can use it along with your Laserdisc player if you've got it connected via the AC3 RF input on the amp with an RCA or digital coax cable. With the VSX-52TX you need a standalone AC3 modulator for compatibility with AC3 on Laserdisc.

Hmmm thought it may be that.

I may get the pioneer as its cheaper than the marantz and the just get a demodulator. A little extra cash but at least I have a more up to date amp.

Would you know of some cheap demods?

Thank you!

No such thing. They don't change hands for less than $100 that I've seen.
If you're willing to deal with a full-size component which takes AC-3 in & provides six analog line-level outputs, you can often get a Yamaha DDP-1 in the $25 range.

The Pioneer receivers that have a Demodulator built in usually in 7TX or 9TX (like VSX-27TX or VSX 39TX.)

Beyond that, you'll have to get an external demodulator.

They're hard to come by in the US, but I was able to get one off of Yahoo Japan for less than $50.

Of course, you'll need to know some working knowledge of written Japanese to navigate the site and use a proxy bidding service to bid on items there.
