Post subject:  Recommend me a receiver

My old Sony STR-DE675 is in danger of going out at some point and runs very hot at times to boot. So I've been perusing for a replacement for some time, but it doesn't help with a very low budget.
Ideally I'd like a new unit with great sound, all the modern codecs, plenty of power and the Marvell Qdeo upscaler. Problem is the Onkyos that are well received and have these all have poor reliability and are prone to failure.
Then there's the issue of newer models not having the power or sound quality of the older and far larger units from the 80's-00's.
So essentially what I'm looking for is either something older that will have great SQ and go up to DD EX/DTS ES and not break the bank-or something HDMI capable with all formats (PL, PL2, EX, ES, Neo 6, DTSHDMA, DDTrueHD) with a good upscaler for LD.

Any recommendations or advice are most appreciated.

i'd recommend going with a pre-1995 model, preferably very early 90's or older PIONEER TOTL,
as those have the best build and finest sound quality of any AV receivers i know.
they sound more like high-performance Hi-Fi components than typical AVRs.
1990 TOTL VSX-D1S would be an excellent choice;

however, if onboard DD processing is a must, i'd strongly recommend early/mid 2000's PIONEER
and YAMAHA TOTL AVRs. beautiful build quality, and surely at very least above average SQ.

In the 90s, Denon and Yamaha ruled. Denon had the more expensive, high power receivers and Yamaha was more budget friendly and had killer DSP capabilities. Now they are all dirt cheap, look for flagship models and no less. Yamaha A1, Z1,Z9 and Denon 5600,5700,5800/X were all the best receivers produced in their era. Pioneer was pretty poor starting early 90s and on. I wouldn't buy anything way older than 98-99, late 90s and very early 00 was when they reached the pinnacle where things were high quality still but also had modern tech.

My all time fave is Denon Avr-5805.
