Post subject:  Sound balance for movies

I am tired of changing sound every 5 minutes of a movie, because action scenes are so loud and when people speak it is too low...
Do you know if there is a sound device with the ability of doing automaticly a sound balance to have a constant level of decibel ?

On my Pioneer A/V Amp it is called the "midnight mode".
Boosting quiet moments and capping too loud ones.

Maybe other brands have something similar?

Yes, my TV has also it, but my player is directy conected to the amp...
Do you know a dedicated machine for this fonction ?

Are we talking about stereo tracks, surround tracks or what?

When converting 5.1 or more to stereo, the levels are decreased by 9dB and have to be compensated by one device in your setup. In my case it's done by my TV before it outputs the signal as LPCM (2ch) to my amplifier.

Every source is converting to stere for me.
I need a hardware to "normalize" this sound... Does it exist, external of TV or Amp ?

Dynamic loudness compression is a feature of ac-3. Most receivers will not compress loudness on pcm and dts. If you read the manuals, the night mode is usually valid on ac-3 soundtracks.

Audyssey xt room correction can compress loudness and bring loud and quiet noises together on all audio soundtracks. You will lose the soul of the soundtrack though

Could it be that you need an equalizer to adjust some of the sound.
Won't really level the audio but can take some of the harsh highs or lows off and equal them out a little.

But like substance said you will lose the soul of the sound from the film.

I will search in this way !
For now I am more thinking about saving the soul of my neighborhood ^^
No, in fact, I don't have AC3 decoder or any AV amp. I jut have a classic stereo Denon amp connected to 2 Dali speakers. I prefer simple stereo sound. For classics, stereo movie it is great configuration, but all movies with strange sound mode ("5.1 super wide effect sound AC3 ++ DTS ...) the balance is becoming so bad...
I don't want to buy av amp, because I like simple machine with dedicated fonction. I don't like AV amp idea of having all the fonction audio/video/upscale/balance/etc in one machine.
Maybe a simple equalizer would be good as you said rein-o. Is there any equalizer with Audyssey system inside ?

I run 2 speaker stereo and have no issues.
The only time I had an issue was with a batman movie on DVD, I believe it was the dark knight with Joker.
The sound was crazy loud with explosions and very soft with dialog.

Try and see if you can change settings on your amp before you look for an equalizer.
But it may work, I haven't had one in years for home audio but they will change the sound, but it may not be for the better???

Maybe a good pair of good headphones at night? (you know the brand that makes gears able to receive AC3RF over Wifi!)

I know that feature you are looking for on my pioneer AVR is called "Dynamic range control" searching that got me this wiki page. They mention stand alone compressor and limiter units, that sounds like what you may be looking for.

There is no stand alone box for this. You are going to have to buy a receiver with audyssey dynamic volume. You can still set it up for 2.0ch.

If your system supports it and you have the space available perhaps you could add a center channel speaker. That way you can direct all dialogue to the center and lower the volume of the L/R speakers to avoid the loud parts blowing your roof off.

One of the exciting things about LD is that the sound mixes were, for the most part, the theatrical mix which is intended to be impactful. They're mixed to 85db in a room of at least 1,500 cubic feet and the mix position is about 13ft from the front speakers. Here is a blurb from THX site:

Quote:
THX has created “room size categories” to help you find the right products to accurately reproduce movies, music and video games in your home. THX Select Certified loudspeakers are designed for medium sized rooms 2,000 cubic feet in size, with a 10-12 foot viewing distance from the screen. THX Ultra Certified loudspeakers bring the cinematic experience to large home theaters, 3,000 cubic feet with a 12 foot or greater viewing distance from the screen. THX Certified Dominus products are for expansive home theaters spaces, 6,500 cubic feet in size, with a 20-foot viewing distance from screen.

My Onkyo TX-SR705 AVR is THX certified and there is a Re-EQ setting that adjusts the high end EQ to a more home theatre tailored response. This function only works with Dolby sources I believe. Here is a blurb from the THX site:

Quote:
RE-EQ
Many movie soundtracks are mixed in studios for playback in large cinema auditoriums
with an array of speakers. When played on home systems, they may appear abrasive and edgy.
Re-EQ establishes a more accurate tonal balance when enjoying movies in your home.

Dolby Digital (AC3) also has a Dialogue Normalizer coded into the stream (dialnorm). You can set your system based on where you like the dialogue to be. Again, only on AC3 sources.

Hope this helps and you find the solution you are looking for!

You know this is probably the first time I get a good description of what the hell a "near field mix" means.

At least, that's what I assume it means.

On my receiver I just crank up the volume on the center channel since that's where 90% of most dialog is placed.

If your receiver doesn't have that feature where you can change the level of volume for each channel, I got nothing.

I use a Rane DC24 for compressing synthesizer sounds and that’s basically what he needs. It’s a stand-alone box (18” rack, 1U) that brings up the volume on quiet stuff and lowers it on loud stuff making things more similar in dynamic range. It’s an analog 2 channel dynamic compressor, they made it for ages so they are cheap, at least in the US. I’ve never used it for this purpose but it would work really well, I’d imagine. We have several of them at my radio station because noob DJs can’t control levels for $%*#. :)

You just need a compressor. The whole music industry uses them by the ton, there are a million different brands and models. A compressor is a device that reduces the level above a certain threshold (you can set it) and by a certain amount, i.e. a ratio (again, you can set it as you like). If you want to compress a source (say, the output of a stereo laserdisc), you'll just need a stereo one. Otherwise you'll need more than one to compress multiple channels. If you want I can explain better.
