I currently have a Sony DA2ES AVR that works very well. On its back, there are 2 separate 5.1 discrete sound inputs. I can select either one using the remote. I am using one of the pair to play the output of an SQ Quad decoder for 4 channel stereo. I am considering buying a Sony STRDN1080 AVR (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XKRWWSG/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_10?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER ). The problem is that the DN1080 lacks discrete 5.1 sound inputs. There are 2 HDMI ports on the DN1080 that are marked as being audio only.

Does anyone know of a 5.1 sound (I would only use 4 of the channels) to HDMI converter? Such a converter would allow me to pipe the quad sound (4.0) into one of the audio only HDMI ports on the DN1080. I have looked on the web and on Amazon and can only find HDMI to 5.1 converters which is the wrong direction.

So, according to you, I would have to give up quad sound in order to upgrade to HDMI, Dolby Atmos 3D and DTS:X. That is a tough choice for me as I do like quad sound. If I look at the amount of software available, Ultra-HD and BR would far exceed what SQ sound there is. I currently only have one 5.0 setup: the living room. My home theater is maybe a year away so it would not be a good spot for quad. Decisions, decisions.

I will have to think on this. I will have to look at other AVR's before I decide.

Frankly for anyone interested in anything much beyond a BD player and a few other HDMI devices (like set-top/cable boxes or games consoles) the input options on this AVR are fairly pitiful. I wonder if just a model or two down the track it will only have HDMI in/out?

If Atmos and DTS:X are the current "must haves" then you get those on paper; but it's still 7.1 so really what's the point? Is there really much benefit or are they just selling the latest logos on the box in this case?

Personally if you want to upgrade in actual quality/fidelity from what you have now without killing the budget; I'd suggest going a more upmarket but second hand AVR that could give you the HDMI and analogue inputs you need, still 7.1 sound, and get some better amplification in there (which may well do more to improve the SQ than some fancy new logos with potentially worse amplification that you have now!).

I have been doing some searching and found this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072K217F7/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3AJW9VK67YG02. This adapter only does stereo so it is a half solution when compared to quad.

I may have to seek out a second hand AVR. My Sony DA2ES AVR I bought used off E-bay and has been excellent for the 2+ years I have had it. I will look at DA3ES, DA4ES and DA5ES (if it exists) AVR's first before maybe going off brand (non-Sony). There are enough AVR manufacturers out there to pick from. What I would really like is a Sony AVR with HDMI inputs/outputs and Control-S jacks for sending IR remote commands to peripherals attached to the AVR. I am doing that currently with a Sony DVD changer located in a closet. The AVR sends IR remote commands (stripped of their carrier) over about 20 feet of cable to the changer. Very handy as you do not need an IR repeater.

Personally, 5.0 sound is adequate for me. Some day, I will buy a subwoofer to make my setup 5.1; but, for now, I am happy with what I have. To go to 7.1 sound would be difficult for me as I do not have the room for the extra 2 speakers in the living room. I may install 7,1 sound in the HT when it is complete.

I said no there isn't because there simply isn't. What you seek does not exist. Hi-vision/muse Ld also uses 3+1 ch surround audio and it needs lpcm 4.0 over hdmi. Many have looked for a solution for years and there isn't one. These formats simply didn't have the penetration for avr manufacturers to consider adding 4.0 inputs.

I am an electrical and computer engineer. I can tell you from diy perspective that implementing one yourself isn't possible as you would have to pay $$$ to get the licensing for any hdmi device and you need to build/code an fpga based system.

I am sorry, you will have to give up as we gave up on proper muse ld audio.

I agree that there is no known way to input baseband audio into the HDMI jacks. Too bad.

I have done some searching on E-bay and found the Sony STR-DA4400ES. It looks like it would fill the bill (http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-STR-DA4400ES-HOME-THEATER-RECEIVER-120-WATTS-7-1-HDMI/122649590819?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649. It lacks Control-S jacks; but, I can live with that. The DA4400ES has a good complement of HDMI ports (6), has one multi-channel input for quad, has component inputs (3), has 4 toslink and 3 coaxial inputs and the price is within my budget.

Now, all I have to do is save up my egg money and buy one. (lol).

Multi ch input on these are simply pass tru. No bass management aka it won't send the bass to subwoofer, no speaker distance/delay, tone controls or anything. You will simply have volume control. 6ch analog input doesn't solve our problems

Did some quick googling and there's a path on the Raspberry Pi to output multi-channel LPCM over HDMI using the OMX libraries, so that could bring the cost way, way down - once you have a program to do it... and a good way to get the digital audio in.

Doesn't help if there isn't an amp that actually can do anything with it though.

Btw, you can also just stack one amp on top of the other. This is free.

It seems ghetto to AVR guys with nice custom furnature but a lot of people in other areas of hifi are always doing this.

The sound quality of an SQ recording is nowhere near what 5.1 can reproduce. My SQ recordings are on LP records and I do not consider them to be HI-Fi. "You will simply have volume control" is what I want. You do not know how difficult it can be to get 4 speakers to play at the same volume. This is why I use my DA2ES as an amp as the main volume control works on all 5 channels making speaker balancing infinitely easier.

If I wanted to, I have an amp that is designed to extract the back 2 channels from the front 2 stereo channels. The amp, a Lafayette LA-424, has tone controls and front and rear volume controls for all 4 channels. It uses the current front 2 speakers and needs an additional 2 rear speakers to work. Those 2 rear speakers are one reason that I do not like to use the LA-424..

I checked my egg money (checkbook) and I had enough money to cover the E-bay purchase of a Sony STR-DA3300ES AVR. I said "had" as I just bought it. It will be the last AVR that I can buy that has all the features that I want: 2-Control-S jacks, 1-multi-channel input, 3-HDMI inputs, 3-component video inputs* and 3-optical and 3-coaxial audio inputs. Any AVR that would be newer would lack Control-S and the multi-channel input as both have been dropped by Sony (so it seems) and other manufacturers.

I plan on using my STR-DA2ES in my Home Theater. It should be able to handle the load. It won't do some of the newer surround sound systems (Atmos for one); but, most of my video recordings have only Dolby 5.1 or DTS and an AVR capable of Atmos would be a waste. The DA2ES's lack of HDMI inputs is not a concern as the Sony HDTV I am looking at has 2 HDMI inputs and I only plan on having 2 HDMI sources feeding the HDTV.

This is what the DA3300ES AVR looks like:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-STR-DA3300ES-WITH-AV-EXTENDED-RM-AAL011-SINGLE-OWNER-L-K-FREE-SHIPPING/152658364187?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

* My DVD changer has composite video and component video outputs. I am wondering if component video is better than composite video for PQ?
