See? That's how out of market news I'm now!

Note that, for all the hate I throw at SONY for their mass market-ization and drop in quality from high end to mid-low end over the past 20 years, I did enjoy my SONY VAIO (VGN-SZ57GN, a rather obscure International/South-East Asia model with English keyboard purchased in Tokyo in 2008 while working at J.P. Morgan) for about 4 years before the H/W broke down. And the VAIO logo is still one of the smartest one invented.

I don't think I can switch over easily to Mac but I'm considering dropping Windows this time for Linux.

Susbtance -- always listen to substance! -- mentioned DELL Starlord and HP Spectre. Will look into that ASAP.

Sony have never been niche, always a huge mass-market corporation. However they've always brought out superior flagship stuff at the same time as run-of-the-mill stuff.

My previous VAIO (a low end one bought in Japan also) lasted ten years. I only got rid of it because I cracked the screen when it was in my backpack. I had a cool VAIO skype mouse with it that opened up into a telephone. I love the Sony way of doing gimmicks.

I still kind of want those extremely cool old VAIO units I used to lust over in Japanese magazines in like the UX380N and C1XE. Can probably be had pretty cheaply on yjp but they would be just one more thing and I have a rule I only buy what I can actually use in the real world today. Never buy for show and tell/cool factor alone.

Looks like I have a winner: the new HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop - 15t touch where HP updated both CPU (i7 7500U => i7 8550U) and GPUs (GeForce 940M => GeForce MX150 + Intel HD 620 => Intel UHD 620).

Image

They don't sell the 15" models in Asia but they do in Europe. However, for some reasons, the previous generation x360 15t on HP France is priced at EUR 2,399 (about US$2,860) while HP USA prices the newer model at US$1,730. Go figure!

I don't think I can catch the 8/30 promo on time for the free stylus+sleeve+McAfee but it sure looks like a good candidate.

Last Wednesday, I got, via Fedex, a Sony DA3300ES AVR to replace my DA2ES AVR. The E-bay seller included the remote control (RM-AAL011), the power cord and the Operating Instructions.

In reading the manual, I ran across a paragraph that I found interesting:

On heat buildup
Although the receiver heats up during
operation, this is not a malfunction. If you
continuously use this receiver at a large
volume, the cabinet temperature of the top,
side and bottom rises considerably. To avoid
burning yourself, do not touch the cabinet.

Just think that the semiconductors inside the cabinet must be almost "military" grade to withstand that much heat. Maybe the ES suffix Sony adds to the model number really means something.

Brought a second Dolby Stereo SR Spectral Recording SRA5, very, very cheap. I powered the unit up and all looked well but didn't have to wire it up so I to check if the cat-280T cards was okay I removed them and placed them inside the currently wired up SRA5 and cards was in fine working order.

After checking it the speaker components I noticed the bass driver must have at some point bottomed out at the last cinema it was installed at? The driver voice coil was all stiff with magnet. Not a big deal I have JBL 208 on the way to hopefully fill in the place as I couldn't find a JBL 308 bass driver cheap enough.

The rest of the drivers mid and tweeter is fine and the box typical scruffs not a big deal the box is fine with the cloth grill.

While checking it out inside to see if the passive crossover was loose in anyway as they can often come loose. Magic my second cat climbed inside the box. That cat can just about slip into any tight space.

Budget entry model from Techwood a 4k smart tv 48" to replace the LG that my cat Magic manged to get around my feet and it tipped over while doing a simple alteration. Magic, "altered the deal prey I don't purr any further". Cats and tv's have a short running time. That's three tv's my cats have killed so far. I don't intend this tv to be number four. They keep there whisker claw mitten paws off of it!

The LG was not bad it had nice picture advance settings which the Techwood skips on it only has mare basic advanced picture settings that I have gotten used to with now.

Its certainly a lot lightweight than the smaller size LG that must have had some larger pcb boards and power supplies or other? Also its a bit slimmer than the LG. Easy to install.

I tried The Mummy (1999) HD-DVD and looked fine okay.

Tried the internet on the smart tv and looked fine okay. Now I can place the smaller Sony flat screen back in place as pc-monitor that served as monitor for few days until the new one arrived.

Only downside cons to any flat screen is that they are fragile and easy to break with ones own bare hands or even punch to the screen and its done in. If it was punching a CRT you'd mostly likely be in hospital with a broken fist.

Recently brought two Behringer PSU for the price of postage only from Europe to replace the failed PSU that broken down on the Behringer DCX2496 some 4 years ago. I got two PSU in the post.

The PSU came from working DCX2496 that was simply refitted with modified ones for lower noise when the various voltages are supplied to the certain parts of the unit.
I had to strip off the power leads AC-input and DC-output and fit them to the newer PSU.

After looking at how some of the parts was fitted after I de-soldered the solder I noticed arrow shape like pin that clips into the PCB and I thought to myself, Sod it! I snipped the wires off close to the plastic and then shorted the ends with wire cutters and hard soldered into the PCB. The other plastic end that is attached to AC input was easier to remove and place on the newer one.

Powered back up like it should do. I was surprised the last user settings was still in the memory after been powered down for 4 years.
