Came across an advertising sign for 'Alpha vision' but haven't found any more info, anyone know about this? I guess it's some kind of improvement over the usual LD karaoke systems which have a green parrot...

Took me a bit of Googling in Japanese but here it is:

Quote:
The last commercial disc karaoke

From around the end of the Showa era to the Heisei era, karaoke was at its peak, and karaoke boxes were popping up like bamboo shoots after the rain.

At first, there were CD autochangers without pictures, then video CD autochangers for a short period of time, and then laser karaoke became all the rage. Large-capacity LD autochangers sold like hotcakes, and karaoke businesses prospered greatly.

Around 1994, when the first type of online karaoke began to become popular, Pioneer B-Max Entertainment Co., Ltd. released the MPEG1 format 12cm commercial-use "Alpha Vision Karaoke", but it was too late and it did not become widespread. It disappeared without the general public knowing about it.

They show up as CD-sized MPEG1 discs indeed, but are NOT compatible with VideoCD.

Pictured here is a Pioneer MAP-V3A:

Oh interesting, good digging!

Half tempted to put a bid on the sign...

Also had a huge autochanger (but less huge than the LD changers):

Looks like they had one more attempt at disc based Karaoke after this with the Super BeMAX'S that used DVDs

https://jpn.pioneer/ja/corp/news/press/index/727

'3) Equipped with the world's first new function that makes full use of 3D computer graphics images.

When a target song is requested, a 3D character will appear.
Karaoke function where 3D characters dance to songs.
3D characters can be added via streaming.'

I really need to get one of these...
