Ahhh, that makes sense that really small stations would use S-VHS.

I keep thinking in terms of Major Networks and their affiliates.

I doubt an Airline copy would get a proper cover. Besides, the FBI sticker says it's for private home use only.

I know some really late beta tapes were only sold via mail order because no store would dedicate shelf space for them so this is probably one of them.

S-VHS is still pretty darned good for a 30+ year-old videocassette format, at least with a solid master source such as DVD feeding it;

I didn't know there were releases this late on Beta so I did some digging and found this article from 2002 where someone said Paramount would do a run if they had at least 20 orders until "a couple of years ago".

Nah, airlines used Video8. Much smaller and easier to put in a 1st class seat with an LCD screen.

I just think Disney decided to support Beta until the bitter end as Disney Beta tapes appear to be the latest ones I've come across.

Still trying to get my hands on a Beta tape of The Lion King that I have seen on Ebay.

Yeah, I posted that article on the first page of the thread here.

I actually read about Sony stopping Betamax hardware manufacturing in 2002 in Widescreen Review magazine along with the same reaction of most people--"they were still making them?!?!?"

Machines I can understand but the software...this had to be mail order only but even then, from who? By 1994 Beta was so out fashion people didn’t even joke about it much anymore. There were no Youtube retro dorks back then. I don’t think Columbia/BMG had a club for Beta that late.

I know Columbia Pictures was the first movie studio to drop support of Beta in the 80s (only releasing new box office hits on Beta but no catalog titles before dropping it completely.) Not sure how that affected Columbia House, if at all.

It seems like the studios supporting Beta the longest were Paramount and Disney. As to why, can't really say.

my local BI-MART (PAC-NORWEST-based membership discount chain) stocked BETA blanks up until the early-2000's,
when they put them in the clearance bin.

they had like five of them on hand. i picked one up for posterity for $2.00.

should have grabbed them all, but 20/20 hindsight and all that...

used to see blanks at Tower Records up until about the same time.

No pre-recorded movies/videos though.

Yeah, that looks to be the Beta equivalent to the Sony “Neige” Minidisc which eventually became the only one left on the market, still easily found new.

That reminds me, I have a couple of sealed blank VHS-C tapes I need to trade away some day...

Song of the South usually sells for more on VHS than on LD...

Probably something a lot to do with accessibility. Then again, I can't imagine there being a lot of VCRs in the US that can play PAL tapes. But for example the ancient Finnish rental VHS of the original Mad Max goes for a lot of money, but the betamax version can be acquired for the fraction of the cost. So I would guess there's a lot more people who can play Song of the South on VHS than they can play a Laserdisc.

Besides, the Japanese SotS LD is relatively cheap compared to the Hong Kong release.
