which are the best? do u guys prefer getting motor driven or blet driven players? im thinking of getting a pro-ject i hear those are good

I use a Rega Planar 2. I've had it now for almost 20 years. Simple, reliable and great sound.

I have an Audio Technica AT-PL50. I'm pretty happy with it.

I'd really like a Continuum http://www.continuumaudiolabs.com/ but will probably pick up a Rek o cut http://esotericsound.com/ one of the few that will play transcription discs as well as 78's, 33,45. BTW- Esoteric has a small selection of LD's for $1 a pop, well packaged and fast shipping.

I've got one of those Ion USB turntables which I intended to rip LPs to my computer. Only thing is, I used the USB connectivity only once. You can only capture audio in MP3 format using the USB connection.

I get MUCH better results using the audio portion of my Video Capture card and capturing the music as a lossless WAV. Then I can recode the WAV as I wish (MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG, etc.)

I'm thinking of getting a better turntable for that, since I don't need one with USB connectivity anymore.

Just walking past one of the local charity shops I couldn't help but notice they we now stocking a tonne of vinyl LPs!
It wasn't that long ago they wouldn't have touched records with a barge pole. Nice to see retro formats come back into vogue like that!

As a music fan I always found the allure of vinyl LPs irresistible as there was just so much music available to explore.

Now with the recent re-issues of many classics LPs I missed first time around I am rebuying many of my favourite CDs again on vinyl.
I love the heavy grade gatefold editions with all those pictures I've never seen - reminds me of laserdiscs.

It seems a turntable is more essential than ever now!

I have a Dual CS-508 from the 80's and a Sharp Optonica BSLT auto flip turntable. It plays both sides of the record without having to turn it over.

I should probably buy a newer one but I have a Techinics I forgot the model number an older one.

I have been using a Direct Drive Techniques SL 1210M5 for the last 5 years. Modified with after market Mogami Cables, KAB fluid damper, KAB swivel for the cover and a thick KAB turntable mat. Also using an AUDIO-TECHNICA AT-440MLA PHONO CARTRIDGE.

I wouldn't mind one of those either if Santa has extras. The last time I checked though (if one appears) used ones in top shape are still going for almost 2 grand.

There was one for sale in may or june of this year on ebay and I think it went for $2500.00 - $3000.00, it did include all of the original packaging though, since they are very rare the old battle ax santa better get busy on tracking a couple down for us

My turntables way - Project 6.1 -> Thorens 124 -> Michell Gyrodec with SME 3009 -> Michel Gyrodec with SME 309

Now I totally like the performance and look of my turntable setup. I use mainly Denon DL103 cartridge. My tonearm is too light for this cartidge so I use additional weight at tonerm shell.

For old (50-60-s) records I like to use vintage Empire and General Electric cartridges.

Question: why not punch holes through the flooring and run the cables that way? That's what I did at the last house.

Thanks for the comments. The reason I didn't conceal the cables is that I'm often rearranging and moving the speakers around all the time. I made a decision early on that I was going to sacrifice some of the aesthetic appeal for pure sound quality. For this reason I have my martin logan's about 5 feet off the front wall. They really come alive like this. Similar situations with the 9 other speakers I have in the room, I moved them so they are about equidistant from my listening position and help the speakers produce the best sound possible. It's amazing how "speaker position" is often ignored while it's one of the most critical aspects of giving good sound. I understand that some people can't have speakers sitting in the middle of their rooms for many reasons, but my home theater was specifically designed to make the audio/visual quality the best it could be.

Also, the wires that are prominent are for my 2 channel audio setup. Since the cables are pretty expensive I don't want to just throw them out. Also, I like to keep the cables for the 2 channel setup as short as possible for best sound. I also would have to run power cables to the martin logan's as well but I don't want my power cables to run too close to the speaker cables. This is why I use speaker wire raisers to keep the speaker wire separated. My 7.2 channel setup for movies has most of the wires running against the walls or under carpets so you don't see them too much.
