Hancock, Amazing Spider man 2, Salt, Chappie, Pineapple express and Smurfs 2. I am sure this selection will make a lot of us jump on 4k wagon. I can't wait to buy Smurfs on 4K in 2016.

Ah also another announcement from Yamaha, this time about Dolby Armos 32ch audio. Yanaha introduced the very first Doby Atmos soundbar everyone! Do you need speakers behind you or above you? Not even once, do you even subwoofer? All you need is this soundbar and the imax is in your home.

In Europe the first ones announced:

kingsman, (Fantastic4 ) X-men -Days of future past

only :problem:

Is there a player available :?: and if so I fear there are going to be first gen. problems ....

I can imagine the players being unable to play certain discs... think hd-dvd :shh:

I wanted to jump on the first player available In Belgium but that's a Samsung and I'm sorry... no Samsung for me. Hate me if you want

Panasonic (my first choice if available) or Sony would be great.

Might be a good idea to pass on the first ones available and let others be the "early adopters" and spend money on these first generation problemmakers.
To my surprise Oppo is very silent about UHD or am I wrong?

Very excited to hear one of those soundbars that play it all... I hear great things when it comes to soundbars but not a true believer yet.
Might be one of those space issue savers sooner or later.
Looking at my equipment sometimes wonder... Do I really need all this? :)
I guess an ac-rf input on a soundbar is out of the question

These above 6 titles are from sony. Fox will release the ones you mentioned in the US. Panasonic already releasing one player on November 15 but it's actually a recorder and $3000.

Oppo won't release a player for at least a year after release. They released their BD player much after format was established. All other high end player will do the same. Don't expect a high end player before late 2017.

I was sarcastic on the soundbar. It's really stupid. If you believe you can get atmos from a 2 foot wide speaker, you watch too much sci-fi.

You really need 11 speakers plus sub for atmos for the minimum.

I've read about the Japanese Pansonic DMR-UBZ1
pricey  :o

Not planning on importing

Soundbars can be great but they won't be rivaling any real setup soon I guess.
They're desinged to blend in IMHO. Never came across a Theatre with only a soundbar below the screen

Went to see Spectre (again) yesterday evening at Kinepolis Brussels Laser Ultra . Breathtaking once again
dolby atmos sounded spectacular.
I'm afraid my ceiling has to go at one point 8-)

I'd like to see Napoleon by Abel Gance on UHD-BD. That is kind of like asking for a castles dinner at McDonald's but the triptych sequence would be epic in 4K.

Couldn't spring for a "classic" film in 4k? I mean this is extremely underwhelming.

I mean isn't Lawerence of Arabia already have a 4k print ready? And for something more mainstream, why not something like The Fifth Element? EDIT: The press release does mention some other films. Like: Fury, Captain Phillips, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Men In Black, Ghostbusters, The Fifth Element, Bad Boys, The Da Vinci Code, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Leon: The Professional, Lawrence Of Arabia, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Guns of Navarone, Taxi Driver, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

So all is not loss, thank god.

They had Lawrence of Arabia on coming soon list on the early days of Blu-ray but it came a good 6 years later (although it already had a 2K master all along). It has been long decided the early adopters who are willing to pay $35-40 per title, want new releases (doesn't matter crappy or what). SO whatever new(blockbuster) film is scheduled to be released in early 2016, will probably get a UHD release as well. They might consider the market for Fury, Captain Philips already saturated, in other words, early adopters already owns the magnificent 2K version. Studios also like to save titles like Taxi Driver, Lawrence of Arabia for a more mature market for bigger sales.

I expect %40 of the titles to be new blockbuster releases, %30 to be medium demand fine films like the Fifth element, Leon, Dracula, %10 spectacular releases like Taxi Driver, The Bridge over, another %20 will wtf why they released this film category. Star Wars, Lawrence, Lord of the Rings and such much much later.

Lawrence of Arabia is actually available as an 8K master, which was released on Blu-Ray some years ago. I've seen a 4K screening of it and it looked marvelous. At least we'll get some older films to try out so it's not all about the modern stuff.

Still I'm a bit worried how this will turn out. Sure a digitally shot nature film will look awesome in 4K but a soft looking film? Not as much improvement over 1080p maybe, but hopefully we'll have less titles with DNR and such. And maybe we can finally hope to get some new masters of films that looked like crap even on Blu-Ray.

When first Blurays hit shelves in 2006, lawrence of arabia was on sony promo discs/brochures as coming soon. There already was a 2k master done for the Hi-Vision release and the subsequent DVD release from mid 90s. It was in top 10 wanted list of all the early bluray adopters. For whatever the reason, Sony didn't release it until 2012. For the 2012 release they made a new 8K master instead of using the old 2K master.

I have the Lawrence BR. It's the cleanest film based content I've ever seen on home video. I have a seriously difficult time imagining the 4k version being any better. If they do manage to extract any more detail from it then it's stuff nobody has ever seen before. As in, even a brand new print and projector are probably going produce enough jitter you'd be lucky to see the quality of what's on the BR. It's not going to get 4x better just because there are 4x as many pixels. Mastering tricks may improve, but in pretty sure we got ALL the detail in the BR.

2012 Limited Edition Blu-ray (Region A/USA) I own approximately 2000 Blu-ray discs including every single Criterion, dozens of limited/collector's edition, dozens of box sets, this Lawrence of Arabia limited edition is the best Blu-ray packaging by far. As signofzeta said, the picture and sound is immaculate. This release also comes with a CD sampler. Maurice Jarre's score is truly mesmerizing. It is not that expensive, I think its around $45 on Amazon.com, I highly recommend this release.

I took this picture in January 2008, this is my Blu-ray collection after 15 months of collecting Blu-rays. It was all silly films, there wasn't really much to buy in the first year. The first Terminator (MGM) movie was the first one I bought in July 2006 (couple weeks after launch), it happened to be the very first release among with some 8 other Sony releases. I paid $34.99 for it and retail was $49.99 I think. I bought most of these titles for around $34.99. I remember I paid $24.99 each for 2001, A clock work orange, eyes wide shot, they were $34.99 each but $24.99 if bought 3 or more. I thought I had a terrific deal. I bought Rocky from BJs for $24.99, it was $29.99 everywhere else. I got the Blade Runner 5 Disc set for $34.99 on the release day from BestBuy.com. Late 2008, prices started coming down a little bit. Major price drop occurred in late 2010. The first transformer movie at $10 on blackfriday 2009 was the lowest a Blu-ray ever sold for up to that time. It was the only disc at $10 at BestBuy, the rest were $14.99. Blackfriday 2010, I bought a dozen or so film at $5. After this, you could find Blu-rays for $8 year round.

I remember DVD had a similar trend back in 1996-1999. From the ones I can remember, I bought the Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition for $39.99 in early 1999 and a year later Extreme edition for $24.99, I thought it was a terrific deal. From the early purchases in 1997, Twister, Batman were $34.99.

If they follow the same trend, they will be priced $39.99-49.99 retail but $34.99 street price, maybe one or two titles at $24.99-@29.99 so that they can say its the same price as a new release Blu-ray.

Really wish 2001 would get a new transfer. I remember thinking how gorgeous it looked a few years ago, but having learnt more about how film should look as time as gone by as well as seeing a theatrical screening in 70mm, the BD comes up way short.

Doesn't look that great indeed.

The DVD counterpart is excellent for its standard however.

I seriously think that high MSRP like $40-50 per film can kill the format considering how much smaller the market for physical media is today compared to ten years ago.
